LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sara Ketron, a sophomore on the Bucknell women's swimming and diving team, has been named the Bison of the Week after breaking three school records, winning a silver medal with the 400-yard freestyle relay, and finishing as one of the 15 highest scorers at the Patriot League Championships over the weekend.
Ketron's most notable feat was breaking Molly Goebel's 16-year-old school record in the 50 free. Goebel's 23.20 at the 2009 Patriot League Championships was the oldest swimming record in the books, and Ketron finally bettered it with a 23.00 in the prelims on Thursday. Swimming in her home pool, she posted a 23.04 in the A Finals later that evening. That was good for a fourth-place finish, just .02 off the medal stand.
In the very first race of the championships, Bucknell broke the school record in the 200 medley relay. Ketron swam the anchor leg – the freestyle leg – on that relay, which posted a time of 1:41.35. The previous record was 1:41.88 at the 2023 PL Championships at Kinney Natatorium. Sofia Burns, Hanna Bingley, and Samantha Benzija joined Ketron on the relay.
On Friday night, Ketron led off the 200 freestyle relay that set a new school record with a time of 1:32.70, which was .23 ahead of last year's record-setting quartet. Ketron hit another 23.04 on the opening 50, and she, Kyla Kelly, Virginia Hastings, and Jennifer Bolden finished in fourth place, just .39 off the podium.
After making the A Finals and finishing seventh in the 200 free on Friday, Ketron had a big final day on Saturday. She finished fourth in the 100 free in 50.69, which moved her into the No. 3 spot on Bucknell's all-time list.
In the final event of the meet, Ketron joined Kelly, Rylie Giles, and Bolden on the silver-medal 400 free relay team. They posted a 3:22.48, the second-fastest time in school history and just .46 off the three-year-old record.
Ketron scored 75 points in her three individual events. That was the second-highest total on the team, trailing only the 88 tallied by Patriot League Rookie of the Meet Clara Renner. The 75 points ranked 15th in the entire field and the most among all sophomores.
Bucknell finished third among 10 teams at the Patriot League Championships, trailing only Navy and Army. The Bison totaled 1,090.5 points, 227.5 more than last year when they finished in fourth place.
Bucknell will be back in action this weekend with a contingent of swimmers competing at the ECAC Championships in Annapolis, Md.
