SATURDAY RESULTS | FULL MEET RESULTS
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's swimming and diving team finished the Patriot League Championships on a high note on Saturday at Kinney Natatorium. Justin DiSanto and Will Hedges broke school records in the morning prelims, and the 400-yard freestyle relay capped off the meet with a near miss at another team record.
DiSanto and Hedges shattered school marks in consecutive events on Saturday morning. DiSanto, a senior captain, went 43.75 in the 100 free prelims, breaking Leo Kuyl's two-year-old mark of 43.92. DiSanto qualified in fourth place, and he came back in the A Final in the evening and finished sixth in 44.37. That was the exact time established by the legendary Jim Harvey in 1988, a record that stood until Kuyl bettered it in 2023.
Only a few minutes after DiSanto put his name on the record board, Hedges broke his own Bucknell mark in the 200 breaststroke. Hedges had actually shared the record with Chadd Cummings at 1:58.85, and now he has it all to himself after posting a 1:58.48 in a sixth-place finish in the prelims. He moved up a spot to fifth in the finals, just missing another record with a time of 1:58.51.
After DiSanto broke the 100 free record, classmate Chris Kopac posted the third-fastest 100 free time with a 43.76 split to open the 400 free relay. Kopac, DiSanto, Dante Buonadonna, and Colin Smith finished fourth in 2:56.44, just one-tenth of a second behind the school record set two years ago by Kuyl, DiSanto, John Gehrig, and Chris Fabian.
Kopac kicked off the final session with a sixth-place finish in the 1,650 free. William Shoemaker was seventh, Finn Franks 14th, and Alex Crossing 17th. Shoemaker hit a PR with a 15:30.58 and still ranks fifth in school history, while Franks moved into the No. 10 spot at 15:45.90. Kopac already held the No. 3 spot on the list with his 15:25.10 at the 2022 Patriot League Championships.
Bucknell had five point-scorers in the 100 free. In addition to DiSanto's sixth-place finish, Buonadonna placed 15th, Smith 16th, Damian Czartoryjski 19th, and Finn Russell 23rd.
Backing up Hedges in the 200 breast was James Lombardi, who won a B Final for the second time in the meet. His ninth-place time of 1:59.85 was sixth-fastest in team history and his first time under two minutes.
In the 200 butterfly, Shane Wynne (10th), Riley Twiss (11th), and Andy Dorsel (13th) all swam in the B Final. Twiss hit a PR with a 1:48.77 in the morning prelims, and remains seventh all-time at Bucknell.
Three Bison scored in the 1-meter diving event. Jack Krug (7th) and Jackson Vinarub (8th) both competed in the evening finals, and earlier Connor Thurston placed 14th.
The big news was Army ending Navy's run of 20 consecutive Patriot League men's titles. The meet was not decided until the final relay, and the Black Knights won it to finish with 1,611.5 points to Navy's 1,595. Loyola, which took second in the 400 free relay ahead of Navy, was third with 1,213 points. Bucknell placed fourth with 952.5, followed by Boston University (626.5), Lehigh (425), Lafayette (368), Holy Cross (355), American (348.5), and Colgate (307).
The Bison will next send a contingent to Annapolis for the ECAC Championships next Friday through Sunday.
