Â
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's swimming and diving team showed off some depth on Day 2 of the Patriot League Championships with five point-scorers in both the 500-yard freestyle and 200 individual medley, and the Bison sit solidly in fourth place with two more full days still to come at Kinney Natatorium
Â
Bucknell now has 339 points after five events were contested on Thursday. It's a tight race at the top, with Navy's 589.5 points only nine ahead of Army. Loyola is third with 407, followed by Bucknell, Boston University (192), Lehigh (177), American (160), Lafayette (149), Holy Cross (147), and Colgate (137).
Â
Senior Andy Dorsel was Bucknell's top individual finisher on Thursday, placing fourth in the 200 IM in 1:47.10. That was a new personal best for Dorsel, and he leapfrogged Sean Quinn from third into second place on Bucknell's all-time top-10 list.
Â
Freshman Dante Buonadonna jumped from 10th to eighth all-time with a 1:48.21. Buonadonna and Shane Wynne (15th) both qualified for the B Final, and Caleb Kubiak (22nd) and Will Hedges (23rd) scored in the C Final.
Â
The Bison also had five point-scorers in the 500 free. Senior Chris Kopac led the way with a 13th-place finish, followed by Riley Twiss (15th), Alex Crossing (16th), Finn Franks (17th), and William Shoemaker (22nd). Franks, a freshman, had a great evening swim, winning the C Final in 4:27.68, which makes him the sixth-fastest performer in school history.
Â
In the 50 free, Finn Russell (13th), Justin DiSanto (14th), and Colin Smith (17th) all scored for Bucknell. Russell and DiSanto already held spots in the top-10, and Smith joined them with the 10th-fastest time (20.37) in team history on the way to the win in the C Final.
Â
The men hit the diving boards for the first time in the meet with the 1-meter competition. Jackson Vinarub compiled a stellar 307.95 score in the prelims, which was the second-best mark in school history. He joined Adam Freeman (318.15 in 2005) as the only Bison to eclipse the 300 plateau on the 1-meter board. Vinarub couldn't match that in the finals on Thursday evening and settled for eighth place at 241.50. Jack Krug placed 15th and Connor Thurston 21st.
Â
Bucknell wrapped up the evening session with a strong fourth-place finish in the 400 medley relay. Wynne, Hedges, Russell, and DiSanto teamed up for a time of 3:14.51, which is fourth-fastest in school history. DiSanto was part of last year's record-setting relay.
Â
The meet resumes on Friday with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. Medals will be handed out in the 100 butterfly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, and 200 free relay.
