
Water Polo Defeats Mount St. Mary's 10-9

LEXINGTON, Va.- The Bucknell Bison women's water polo team began the VMI Invite with a 10-9 victory over the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers. Bucknell (3-1) has now won three straight games - all one goal contests. Mount St. Mary's dropped to 3-2. The Bison also played an exhibition match against the University of Toronto and fell 9-7 against the Canadian powerhouse.Â

Two Bison players led the team with three goals apiece. Olivia Hopper continued her impressive freshman season by improving her goal amount to a team-leading eight. Gwen Kallmeyer now has four tallies on the season.Â
Bucknell led 3-2 after the first period. Hopper and Kallmeyer paired goals with a tally from freshman Hayden Hedstrom.Â
The Bison ran its advantage to a 6-3 halftime lead. Hopper added two more goals and Campbell Collins found the back of the net.Â
The Orange & Blue's offense stagnated in the third period only scoring one goal courtesy of Kallmeyer. The Mount tallied three scores to move within 7-6.
Both teams scored three goals in the final stanza. Bucknell's two South African players Boati Motau and Caitlin Stott each deposited a score and Kallmeyer scored the for the last time to build a 10-7 lead. The Mount refused to quit and punished the net twice. The Bison defense held strong and Bucknell won the 10-9 nailbiter.Â

The Bison displayed an excellent showing against a talented Toronto. Olivia Hopper led the team with three goals.Â
Toronto led 2-0 after the opening quarter and 5-2 at halftime.Â
Bucknell trailed 8-3 entering the final period despite two goals from Hopper and one from Hayden Hedstrom.Â
The Orange & Blue displayed tenacious fight outscoring Toronto 4-1 in the final stanza. Sidney Finkler tallied two goals as part of the charge but time ran out on Bucknell.Â
