LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Naiteitei Mose returned an interception 65 yards for a touchdown with 12 seconds remaining in the game, lifting Georgetown to a wild 31-24 win over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
The Bison overcame a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit thanks to a TJ Cadden 20-yard touchdown catch and a Matt Schearer 27-yard field goal with 3:02 left. Georgetown had a long TD called back on an offensive pass interference penalty, and the Bison got the ball back near midfield after a shanked punt with 42 seconds to go. But after a short completion, Christopher Dietrich's pass toward the left sideline was picked off by Mose, and the linebacker rumbled down the sideline for the winning score.Â
Chris Dietrich had the nod at quarterback and went 18-of-30 for 222 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for a touchdown, his career first of that nature.Â
TJ Cadden led the Bison in receiving with 5 receptions for 76 yards and one touchdown. In this game, Cadden also surpassed 1,000 career receiving yards. Tariq Thomas led the team in rushing with 12 carries for 93 yards.Â
Brandon Biagiarelli led the team in tackles with 11 total (7 solo, 4 assisted) and had two tackles for loss and one sack. Five different Bison recorded sacks in the game; Biagiarelli, England Allen, Nick Hoying, Jack Goheen and Jack Inserra. The five sacks is the Bison's most this season.
Both teams went scoreless on their first drives. Georgetown was held to a three-and-out by the Bison defense. Bucknell opened their drive on the Hoyas' 18-yard line thanks to a 54-yard punt return by TJ Cadden, but Matt Schearer would miss the 33-yard field goal attempt due to a botched hold.Â
The Hoyas would immediately take advantage of the missed kick by opening their next drive with a 31-yard rush by Savion Hart. The eight-play 80-yard drive would end up resulting in a 10-yard rushing touchdown by Hart and a made extra point by Thomas Anderson to put Georgetown on the board first.
Bucknell had another promising drive, highlighted by a 33-yard catch for freshman Kaleb Lampkins, but would end up having to punt the ball from the Georgetown 40-yard line. Schearer pinned the Hoyas' offense to their own two-yard line with a 38-yard punt. Deep in their own territory, Georgetown would be forced to punt after England Allen found his way to Dez Thomas II and got a sack on third down.Â
Then, the scoring gates opened as the next three drives would all result in touchdowns. The Bison offense opened their drive with a 49-yard rush down the sideline which would set the Bison up for a first-and-goal opportunity at the start of the second quarter. After the first attempt went incomplete, Dietrich then found Charlie Kreinbucher in the back of the end zone for a one-yard touchdown reception, the tight end's first of the season. Matt Schearer made the extra point to tie the game at seven.Â
After Bucknell made it even, Georgetown put together a 5-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to regain the lead at 14-7. On the drive, Jimmy Kibble had a 39-yard reception to set up Hart for a one-yard touchdown rush. Anderson made the extra point.Â
The Bison then tied it up once again on a 10-play, 76-yard touchdown drive that featured a 25-yard catch by TJ Cadden and culminated in Dietrich keeping the ball on a seven-yard rush for his career first rushing touchdown. Schearer made the extra point to tie it at 14 with 7:00 left in the first half.
Georgetown was able to garner two first downs on its next drive, but the Bison, Jack Goheen in particular, would come up with two big stops in a row to force the Hoyas to punt. Goheen tackled Thomas II for a loss of one yard and followed that up by sacking him to force a third-and-long play that the Bison were able to stop. Bucknell wouldn't be able to find a hole for its offense on its next drive, however, as the Bison went three-and-out.
After two Georgetown rushing plays totaled five yards, Brandon Biagiarelli came up with a sack on third-and-five with 1:42 left in the first half to force Georgetown to punt. The rest of the half would remain scoreless and the teams would enter the locker rooms in a 14-14 tie.
The Hoyas opened the second half by forcing the Bison to punt and then putting together a four-play, 56-yard touchdown drive that culminated in a 31-yard touchdown grab by Hassan Mahasin to take a one-score lead. After the Hoyas touchdown opening the half, the teams traded punts on the next six drives. Nick Hoying was able to record a sack on third-and-eight at the Bucknell 46-yard line on the fourth drive of the bunch to force a punt.
At the start of the fourth quarter, the Hoyas punted the ball to TJ Cadden, and the receiver fumbled the catch at the Bucknell 25-yard line. Georgetown's Joel Mireles recovered the ball to give the Hoyas offense a chance with great starting field position. The Bison defense came up with a pass breakup by England Allen on first down, and on third-and-three Aaron Davis made a tackle to force the Hoyas to settle for a field goal attempt. Anderson made the 35-yard field goal to extend Georgetown's lead.Â
TJ Cadden made up for his muffed punt return on the next drive with a 20-yard touchdown catch to bring the Bison within one score. His brother, Michael Cadden, set up the touchdown pass with a 49-yard catch of his own to bring the ball to the Georgetown 26. Schearer made the extra point to make it a three point game with 10:33 left in the fourth quarter. The Bison defense, with tackles from Drew Cormier and Hoying, forced the Hoyas to go three-and-out on their next drive.
After an 11-play, 63-yard drive, Bucknell was unable to get in the end zone on three downs, but Matt Schearer made a 27-yard field goal to tie the game at 24. The Bison's defense stood strong and forced Georgetown to punt with 42 seconds left in the game and the punt was shanked, but after a short completion, Dietrich's next pass toward the left sideline was picked off by Mose, and the linebacker ran down the sideline for a game-winning pick-six with 12 seconds left in the game.
The Bison head into their bye week with a 4-5 record. Bucknell will play next on Saturday, Nov. 8 against Fordham.
