RESULTS
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Bucknell women's golf team jumped out to a big lead after the first of two rounds of the Red Flash Invitational, hosted by Saint Francis at Sunnehanna Country Club. Playing in cool and windy conditions, the Bison counted four scores between 74-77 and have a nine-stroke advantage over second-place Towson at the midway point of the tournament.
Sophomore Sophia Bardunias is tied for the individual lead after carding a 2-over-par 74. Freshman Joelle Johnson (75, 3rd), senior Paige Richter (76, T-4th), and junior Nicole Yun (77, T-8th) are all in the top eight heading into Tuesday's final round.
Bardunias started on the eighth hole, and after opening with a pair of bogeys, she played the rest of the round in even par with a couple of nice birdies at holes 12 and 14. Johnson also had a resilient round, bouncing back from back-to-back doubles at 15 and 16 with birdies at 18 and 2. She played her final seven holes in 2-under after the brief hiccup.
Richter birdied the 11th hole and had nothing worse than par on her card, and Yun made two birdies on the way to her 77.
Bucknell's 302 total is nine shots better than Towson, and Howard (317), Purdue Fort Wayne (318), and Duquesne (319) round out the top five in a 10-team field.
Bardunias is tied with Duquesne's Sasha Petrochko at 2-over par, with Johnson one back, Richter two back, and Yun just three shots off the pace.
The second and final round gets underway on Tuesday at 10 a.m. The Bison will be looking to close out their third win of the fall season. They previously won the Bucknell Invitational and the Battle at the Creek in September, and they were runners-up at the Navy Fall Invitational earlier this month. Bucknell has had the Patriot League Player of the Week after all four of its previous events, with four different players accounting for the awards.
