BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Bucknell men's soccer team fell to Lehigh 2-1 on a late goal on Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich sports Complex.
Lehigh (7-4-3, 4-1-1 PL) put on some attacking pressure late in the match and sent a ball into the box. An initial shot was blocked in front of goal, and Thomas Robinson put away the rebound to give Lehigh all three points.
Bucknell (7-3-3, 3-2-1 PL) dropped behind Lehigh in the standings after coming into the match tied on 10 points.
The Mountain Hawks opened the scoring early in the eighth minute with a goal by Giacomo Zizza. Zizza received a pass in the box, and he made a great move to put the ball on his left foot to tuck it into the far corner.
Kasper Piela equalized just nine minutes later in the 17th minute for his first goal of the season. Lehigh failed to clear a corner and the ball propped up for Piela just in front of goal.
Freddie Lapworth and Collin Sullivan kept the match level with two big saves late in the half. Lapworth got big to stop the initial shot, and Sullivan darted into goal to prevent a rebound goal being scored.
Bucknell had several opportunities to take the lead in the second half, forcing three saves from goalkeeper Anton Kinnunen. The first big chance came from Roskos after great link-up play from him and Cade McGrath. McGrath played Roskos into space in the box and the forward rifled his shot off of the crossbar.
Jakub Samelko had an opportunity late in the half on a ball played in by Nate Coughlin. Samelko took a hard shot from a tight angle and Kinnunen stuck out a big hand to make the save.
The Bison out-shot the Mountain Hawks 14-7 with both sides taking five shots on target. Lapworth made three saves in the match.
Bucknell is back in action on Tuesday night as the Bison end a three-match road stretch at Saint Joseph's.
