About the Meets
- The Bucknell men's and women's swimming and diving teams have returned from their annual winter training trip to Florida and are set to resume their dual-meet schedules this weekend. The Bison will swim at La Salle on Friday in their first and only away dual of the season, and then they return home to face Patriot League rival Army West Point on Saturday afternoon.
- Bucknell and La Salle were once league rivals on the men's side in the Middle Atlantic Conference and East Coast Conference. In fact, Bucknell captured five conference championships in La Salle's pool: the 1971 and 1973 MAC titles and the 1975, 1977, and 1978 ECC titles. They first met in a dual meet in 1960, and the Explorers hold a 20-16 lead in the all-time series. La Salle won 12 straight duals from 1979-2011, but the Bison have captured the last two, including a 179-121 verdict last season at Kinney Natatorium. The team's last visit to Kirk Pool resulted in a 171-127 Bison victory in 2012.
- The Bucknell women are 6-9 all-time against La Salle in a series that dates back to 1983. The two teams met last season for the first time in 12 years, and the Bison prevailed 185-115 in Lewisburg.
- Bucknell's women's squad has had very good success through the years going head-to-head with Army. The Bison lead the all-time series 22-9 dating back to 1981, although the Black Knights have won the last two. Army prevailed 207-93 at West Point last season.
- Bucknell and Army first met in men's swimming and diving in 1966, and the Black Knights have won 33 of the 38 duals since then, including the last 12 in a row. Army won 218-81 last season at West Point. Bucknell's last series win was a 160.5-134.5 verdict at Crandall Pool in 2012, and the last Bison win at Kinney Natatorium came in 2009 by a 190-108 count.
- Army swept arch-rival Navy at home on Dec. 5, with the women winning 169-131 and the men prevailing 192.5-107.5. It was their first Star Meet sweep of the Mids since 1988.
- Bucknell's last full-team competition was the three-day Bucknell Invitational back on Nov. 22-24. The Bison fared very well in the trials/finals meet, finishing second to Connecticut and ahead of Delaware, Davidson, Fordham, Seton Hall, and UMBC.
- The Bison put an exclamation point on that strong showing with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Virginia Hastings, Sara Ketron, Jennifer Bolden, and Kyla Kelly won an exciting race out of Lane 1, and their time of 3:23.14 was the third-fastest in school history and the fastest ever in a non-league championship meet.
- Standout freshman Clara Renner posted second-place finishes in the 500 and 1,650 freestyles and the 400 IM. She was runner-up to reigning Big East Swimmer of the Meet Allie Waggoner in all three races. Renner has already penciled her name into the Bucknell top-10 lists in seven individual events and one relay.
- Renner attended the prestigious Toyota U.S. Open meet in Greensboro, N.C., the first week in December and qualified for evening swims in both the 200 and 500 free. She made the A Final in the 500 and finished sixth, and one day later she was runner-up in the B Final in the 200.
- All told, the Bison women put 14 new top-10 times into the record books at the Bucknell Invitational. In individual events, Renner added five new top-10 times, Kelly added two, and Sam Benzija, Sydney Jee, Sara Ketron, and Skye Sunderhauf also had top-10 PRs.
- Bucknell is 3-1 in dual meets thus far, all coming against Patriot League rivals. The Bison opened the season with a 215-84 win over Boston University, and then in a quad meet defeated American (244.5-54.5) and Lafayette (234-66) while falling to Navy (161-134).
- The Bison men are 2-2 on the season after beating American (231-66) and Lafayette (238-62) and falling to Navy (172-117) and Boston University (157.5-140.5).
- Bucknell's last full-team competition was the Bucknell Invitational on Nov. 22-24. The Bison finished fifth in the meet, placing ahead of Davidson and behind Delaware, UMBC, Seton Hall, and Fordham.
- Andy Dorsel headlined the weekend with an impressive win in the 400 IM on day two. One day later he competed in back-to-back events and made the finals in both the 200 breast (4th) and 200 fly (7th).
- Chris Kopac, who logged four individual wins in the first two meets of the season, represented the Bison at the Toyota U.S. Open in Greensboro, N.C. He competed in the 200 and 500 freestyles.
- Bucknell's divers all performed well during the fall semester. Jack Krug, Jackson Vinarub, and Connor Thurston have already set PRs on the 3-meter board. Vinarub's 307.8 against Boston University moved him up to the No. 2 spot on Bucknell's all-time list, and Krug's 299.5 at the Fall Invite moved him up from seventh to fifth. Thurston's mark of 271.65 in the quad was just .3 away from cracking the top 10.
- After this weekend's duals, the Bison will have only three meets remaining – all at home -- leading up to the 2025 Patriot League Championships, which will be held Feb. 19-22 at Kinney Natatorium.
- Next up is Loyola on Friday, Jan. 17 at 1 p.m.
