UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Juniors Amar Tahirovic and Adam Stavrakas won three-set matches in the top two singles positions, but Penn State won the other four in straight sets on the way to a 5-2 win over Bucknell on Sunday afternoon at the PSU Indoor Tennis Center.
Tahirovic avenged a three-set loss to Penn State's Loren Byers at the ITA Northeast Regional in October. He rolled to a 6-1 decision in the opening set, Byers came back to win the second set in a tiebreaker (7-5), and then Tahirovic won 6-4 in the third to improve to 13-2 on the full season.
Stavrakas is now 13-3 after coming from a set down to beat Charl Morgan 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. His win brought the Bison (1-1) within 3-2 in the match, but Penn State closed it out with Reiya Hattori's win over Brendan McDonald at No. 5.
The Nittany Lions started the day by claiming the doubles point with wins on Courts 1 and 3. Stavrakas and Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega were 5-all against Byers and Sam Bossem when the match was halted.
Next up for the Bison is a key Patriot League matchup at Army next Saturday. Bucknell will also play Fairfield at West Point later in the day.
