Women's Track & Field to Hold Gulden Invitational on Saturday

LEWISBURG, Pa.-Â The Bucknell women's track & field team hosts the annual Gulden Invitational this Saturday at Gerhard Fieldhouse. Bucknell returns to its home pastures after competing last weekend at the Nittany Lion Challenge.Â

The Art Gulden StoryÂ
The competition honors Bucknell's legendary track & field coach Art Gulden. He led the program, that he built from scratch for 31 years, before passing away in the spring of 2001 due to complications from his lengthy and tenacious fight with cancer. Gulden won 68 conference titles with the Bison and more importantly coached nearly a dozen student-athletes to national Academic All-America honors. He was named Patriot League Coach of the Year 20 times in a 11-year stretch. His men's cross country teams won 18 straight conference titles between 1975-92 and won three IC4A championships. Arguably Bucknell's most nationally-accomplished sports program, the Bison men's cross country program qualified for the NCAA Championships nine times in a 20-year span, and at one point compiled a remarkable dual-meet winning streak of 167 -- spanning 16 years.
A monument to Coach Gulden was installed outside the doors to the Gerhard Fieldhouse and is seen by every Bucknell track & field athlete as they enter and depart from practice.Â

"We are very excited to once again host the Art Gulden Invitational. We treat this as a team-oriented meet that is scored so the coaches promote placing more so than chasing times and distances. However, the times and distances at this meet are usually very good for the top finishers. It is a little larger meet than previous years with 11 total schools for each gender, so scoring will not be easy. We obviously will be trying to win both genders, but it will not be easy with the competition."

Bucknell will split its squad for the home Bison Open & Multi (Jan. 30 & Feb. 1) and the Penn State National Open (Jan. 30 & Feb. 1).Â

Last Time Out (Nittany Lion Challenge)
- The Bison did not win an event but notched numerous top ten finishes against some elite Eastern competition.Â
- Justley Sharp continued her overwhelming presence in the shot put by finishing second tossing the instrument 49-4.5 feet.
- Freshman Madison Fowler etched her name in the Bucknell record book with her fifth-place throw of 46-5.5 which ranks seventh in Bucknell history.
- Freshman Alexandra Lea continued her successful start to her collegiate career finishing fourth (58.27) in the 400-meter dash.
- Caryn Rippey kept her momentum surging from the 2024 track and cross-country seasons, winning fourth (2:16.18) in the 800-meter run.
