WORCESTER, Mass.- The Holy Cross Crusaders ended the Bucknell Bison women's basketball team's three-game winning streak with a 63-37 victory Wednesday night. Bucknell (8-8, 3-2 Patriot League) missed an opportunity with Navy's loss earlier to move into a tie for first place. Instead, Holy Cross (11-5, 4-1 Patriot League) slid into the space.
The teams were knotted at 21-21 before the Crusaders ended the first half on a 7-0 run. The Worcester team extended the stretch into the third quarter and the entire second half for a 42-16 segment.
The Bison started the game 3-of-3 from the field but finished 14-of-55 (25.5%). Holy Cross went 26-of-53 (49.1%) and 5-of-11 (45.5%) from three-point land.
Bucknell's efforts were hampered by 18 turnovers ruining a two-game stretch where the Bison posted fewer than ten.
Three Bison players, Tuana Coskun, Ashley Sofilkanich, and Elana Weisman, tied for the team lead in points with eight. It marks the first contest since the opener against Penn State that Sofilkanich was held to single digits.
Isabella Casey scored a career-high seven points as the freshman guard made several nice baskets.
The first half was a close affair. The teams were tied 12-12 after the first quarter with both squads parrying each other's blows. The closeness continued into the second period before Holy Cross staged the late run to carry momentum into the halftime locker room.
The Bison never inched closer than those seven points as the Crusaders moved ahead 36-25 before the third-quarter media timeout. Cross extended its lead to 45-29 as the third period ended.
Bucknell tried but was unable to mount a fourth-quarter rally. The Crusaders continued to shoot well finishing 15-of-27 (55.5%) in the second half and outscored the Bison 18-8 in the final stanza. The game ended with Isabella King collecting her eighth rebound setting a new season-high.
