WILLIAMSBURG, Va.- The Bucknell Bison volleyball team improved to 5-1 on the young season by sweeping George Mason (2-3) and Quinnipiac (1-5) on the final day of the Tribe Invitational. The victories were amplified by Jordan Hardy setting the Bucknell program record for digs.
GMU Recap
Bucknell easily handed a loss to the George Mason Patriots, as the Bison performed like a machine against the overmatched Virginia team. Bri Frazilus led the attack with 15 kills on an excellent .481 hitting percentage.
The first set began deceptively by suggesting a closely fought match. GMU and Bucknell traded points repeatedly until it was 12-10 Bison. The Orange & Blue shifted into second gear, winning the set on a 13-7 run.
During that run, Hardy collected her historic dig to set the Bucknell record and move into tenth place in Patriot League history.
The third set saw a 5-5 deadlock and then a 7-6 Bucknell advantage. That set the stage for a 7-0 Bucknell run, which expanded into a 12-2 stretch. The segment essentially put the set and game away. Mason recorded a few more points but the match ended on a 3-0 Bucknell run. Frazilus's service ace concluded the game on a high-flying note.
Quinnipiac Recap
The Bobcats dashed to a 10-5 lead in the first set. The Bison responded with an 11-5 run gaining the lead. Quinnipiac battled back but Bucknell kept two points ahead. The Bobcats tied it at 24-24 but a service error and a Hardy service ace won the set.
The second set started evenly and settled at 8-8 before the Bison created separation that would hold up for the stanza. A 3-0 run sprung Bucknell. The Orange & Blue extended its lead to 19-14 before the Bobcats cut the deficit to two. Hagstrom, a master of blunting opponent momentum, called timeout. Bucknell regrouped and finished the set on a 5-1 run.
The Bison easily won the third and final set, 25-13. Quinnipiac did grab a short 4-3 lead before a 13-2 run erased its accomplishment. The Bobcats kept clawing but the Bison sensed the sweep and kept the pressure going. A Tijana Kostic kill gave her the match lead for kills and Bucknell the match and weekend sweep.
Notes
Hardy now has 1616 digs, ranking her ninth in Patriot League history.
