LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison field hockey offense stalled in a 1-0 overtime loss to the Delaware Blue Hens (1-1) Friday night. The Bison (0-3) had multiple chances but could not convert any attempts into points. It was Bucknell's first loss at Holmes Stadium since Oct. 30, 2022 when the Orange & Blue fell to Boston University.Â
The first quarter featured virtually zero offense as both teams combined for one single shot. There was much passing and concession in lieu of offensive attacking. It was a defensive affair.Â
The second period picked up some offense pace with each team providing four shots. Bucknell had several penalty corner situations but could not penetrate the stiff Delaware defense. Sarah Althouse continues her incredible defensive play by making several saves.Â
The Bison had a golden chance in the third quarter when a Delaware Blue Hen was serving a yellow card penalty. Bucknell had four point-blank shots but the Delaware goalkeeper refused to yield a tally.Â
Kira Leclercq made history in the fourth quarter. The Patriot League Preseason Defender of the Year prevented a goal with a defensive save. It gave her four for the season and 16 for her career. Leclercq now has sole possession of second place in Bucknell history, passing Steph Graf.Â
A decisive moment came in the 58th minute when freshman Reese Czajkowski was flagged for a ten-minute penalty. The time bled into the overtime period and forced the Bison to play a woman down.Â
Delaware seized advantage in the overtime period by consistently keeping the Bison defense under siege. The Blue Hens scored the golden goal when Althouse stretched in vain for a pass. The ball slipped under her glove and Lulu Felton knocked it home.Â
Bucknell returns to action this Sunday versus UMass Lowell at noon.Â
