WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Liza Suydam scored two first-half goals to lift unbeaten Monmouth to a 3-0 win over visiting Bucknell on Sunday at Hesse Field on the Great Lawn. The Bison fell to 2-2-1 on the season, while Monmouth improved to 3-0-2.
The Hawks, who own a 1-1 draw with No. 21 Virginia Tech, have allowed only two goals in five outings this season. They became the first team to keep Bucknell off the board in 2024.
Neither team had managed a shot on target until Suydam put Monmouth in front at the 25-minute mark. Suydam's second of the day was a sensational left-footed strike from outside the box off the underside of the crossbar in the top right corner.
Eight of Bucknell's 10 shots came in the second half, but any hopes of a comeback were dimmed when Ashley Lavrich tacked on a third for the Hawks in the 56th minute.
The final shot board was even at 10-10, and Monmouth earned the game's only two corner kicks. Jess Benattar and Dylan Zednik split the game in goal for the Bison, and Zednik recorded the team's lone save. Cassandra Coster made two saves for the Hawks, who lost in the Coastal Athletic Association Tournament final a year ago.
