OXFORD, Ohio- The Bucknell Bison field hockey team (0-1) fell 2-1 to the Miami (OH) Redhawks (1-0). The Orange & Blue tried to rally but could not score more than one goal.
The first great scoring opportunity came six minutes into the game when the Bison were rewarded a penalty stroke. Lily Neilson received the opportunity, but the Miami goalkeeper read her shot and blocked it. Neilson is 0-3 in penalty strokes since 2023. Miami launched more pressure on the Bison, and goalkeeper Sarah Althouse made several excellent saves. Â
The second quarter featured little action and scoring opportunities as both teams enforced strict defensive guardrails on the opposition. The intense heat forced many substitutions, but the changing of the guard did not change fortunes. Neither team attempted a shot in the period.
Miami broke through in the third quarter with a goal by Carlie Servis. Berta Mata provided the assist. The tally was obtained seconds before the mid-quarter hydration break.
The Redhawks extended their lead to 2-0 in the fourth quarter on a Martinez Pena shot that ran up Althouse's gear and into the cage. The Bison countered a minute and five seconds later. A penalty corner set up a clever play where Kira Leclercq sent the ball to Isabella Pavlides, who passed it to freshman Sally Hunter. The newcomer tapped it in for a goal to score in her collegiate debut. That ended the scoring as the Bison could not find an equalizer.
