Bison Rowers Post Win and Two Runner-Up Finishes at George Mason Invitational

FAIRFAX STATION, Va. – The Bucknell rowing team had an outstanding race day at the George Mason Invitational on Sunday, as the Bison Second Varsity Eight won its Grand Final, while the Varsity Eight and Varsity Four both finished second.

The 2V8+, under the direction of coxswain Hattie Hopper and stroked by Haley Beardsley, finished second to George Washington in its morning heat but then came back in the afternoon to cut 18 seconds off its prelim time and edge the runner-up Revolutionaries by four seconds. Bucknell finished in 6:55.0, followed by GW (6:59.0), Delaware (7:01.9), West Virginia (7:02.7), Duquesne (7:10.3), and Villanova (7:13.8).

Coxswain Juliette Gaggini's Varsity Eight finished third in its morning heat and had the fifth-fasted qualifying time (7:02.5), but in the Grand Final the Bison finished in 6:58.9, in a dead heat with Saint Joseph's for the silver-medal position. George Washington won the race in 6:49.1. Villanova (7:05.4), Duquesne (7:07.3), and Delaware (7:17.2) rounded out the top six.

It was also a good day for the Varsity Four, as the Bison had the fastest boat in qualifying at 7:49.3. In the Grand Final later in the day, Saint Joseph's finished just a few seats in front of Bucknell, finishing in 7:48.2 to the Bison's 7:49.8. George Washington was well back in third in 7:55.9, followed by West Virginia (7:56.6), Delaware (8:05.5), and Eastern Michigan (8:19.9)

The Bison will compete on their home course on the Susquehanna River twice next weekend. Duquesne visits on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., followed by Connecticut on Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
