About the Bison
- The Patriot League Women's Golf Championship comes to the Bucknell Golf Club for the third time, as six teams will vie for the league title in the three-day, 54-hole event. Bucknell previously hosted the inaugural event in 2013 and again in 2016. The Bison were slated to host the 2020 championship, but it was canceled due to the pandemic.
- The Bison are bookending their 2023-24 season with home events. Their last tournament here was the Bucknell Invitational to kick off the fall campaign on Sept. 9-10, and it was a record-setting weekend for the Bison. With rounds of 292-299-305, they set team 18-, 36-, and 54-hole scoring records. Freshmen Lila Smith and Sofia Nogalo led the charge that weekend in their collegiate debuts. Smith fired a school-record 68 in the second round on the way to a sixth-place finish, and Nogalo shot 72-77-72 to finish T-3rd.
- The Patriot League Championship uses a play-six/count-four format, and Bucknell coach Laura Tyler-Cook will send out the team's youngest-ever postseason lineup featuring four freshmen, a sophomore, and a senior. Â
- Sophomore Paige Richter will lead the Bison sextet this weekend. Richter has three top-10 finishes this season, including a third-place showing at the SMSU Spring Classic, and her 78.1 full-season average is the best on the team.
- Following Richter are the four freshmen: Nicole Yun (79.8), Nogalo (78.4), Smith (79.9), and Katherine Vice (80.1). Yun shot a second-round 73 two weeks ago at the Youngstown State Invitational, and Vice posted 77-75 to finish fifth in that event and claim Patriot League Golfer of the Week honors.Â
- Bucknell will be in early wave of tee times on Friday, ranging from 8:30-9:20 a.m. The Bison will be paired with Navy and Holy Cross in the opening round. Richmond, Boston University, and Lehigh will tee off from 9:30-10:20 a.m.Â
- This is the 10th anniversary of Bucknell's lone Patriot League title. The league began sponsoring women's golf in 2013 – the Bison played 10 seasons in the Big South Conference until then – and Bucknell won the second championship in 2014 at Saucon Valley Country Club. Lauren Bernard, Bridget Wilcox, and Kasha Scott finished 3-4-5 to lead the charge.
- Bucknell hosted the inaugural championship in 2013 and was runner-up to Lehigh by three strokes, despite 2-3-5 finishes from Wilcox, Bernard, and Scott. The Bison hosted again in 2016 and finished in fourth place, with Emily Larson (T-4th) and Lindsay Dodovich (T-9th) both placing in the top-10. Richmond won the 2016 title with a 913 total.
- The Bison are looking to move up after placing fifth in each of the last two seasons. Richmond hosted last year's championship at Independence GC, and the Spiders claimed the title with an 874 composite. Bucknell's 907 was its best 54-hole score in any Patriot League or Big South tourney. Paige Richter earned an All-Patriot League medal with a T-7th finish.
