KENT, Ohio – Junior attacker Allie Boyce scored three times and became the 10th member of Bucknell's 100-goal club, highlighting a 15-12 road win for the Bison women's lacrosse team over Kent State on Saturday afternoon at Dix Stadium. Freshman Braeden Siverson notched her first career hat trick, Abby Henderson and Regan Sansiviero scored their first collegiate goals, and Tatumn Kohlbrenner logged two goals and seven draw controls, including one of each at a critical late juncture to help seal the win.
Bucknell (2-4) never trailed in the game and used a dominant stretch in each half to take control. The Bison led by as many as eight before Kent State (2-6) made things interesting with a four-goal run in the fourth quarter.
The game was all knotted up at 2-2 midway through the first period when freshman Abby Henderson scored her first career goal to ignite a 6-0 Bucknell surge. Kohlbrenner made it 5-2 off a feed from Emily Baird, and then Boyce scored the next three in a row to reach her milestone.
Boyce's 99th and 100th career goals came 38 seconds apart early in the second quarter. Siverson set up No. 100, and Boyce was mobbed by the entire bench as coach Jackie Dando called timeout after the goal. Boyce canned her team-leading 15th of the season only two minutes later to make it an 8-2 game.
Jackie Wolford scored twice in a three-goal run for Kent State to bring the defending Mid-American Conference regular-season champs within 8-5. Siverson came up big in the final minute of the half. She won the draw after Wolford's second goal, took a stick to the face to draw a green card, and then scored after the restart to make it a 9-5 game at the half.
Bucknell dominated the first 10 minutes of the second half. Henderson scored her second of the day just 58 seconds in, Megan Krestinski scored twice in a row off feeds from Taylor McClain, and Katie Browne finished a Sansiviero feed from behind the cage to make it a 12-5 game.
After Zayda Crumpton and Haleigh Greenberg scored 44 seconds apart for Kent State, Sansiviero scored her first goal for a 14-7 Bison lead after three periods.
Kent State's potent offense came alive in the fourth quarter, as Wolford's fifth goal of the day and 21st of the season pulled the Red Flashes within 14-11 with 8:33 still to play. The Bison came up with a couple of big stops, however, and Kohlbrenner ended their surge with a rip on the run with 4:02 to play.
Peyton Gellin got one back for Kent State to make it 15-12 with 1:05 left, but Kohlbrenner nabbed the next draw control and Bison played keep-away for the final minute.
Bucknell finished with a 36-25 shot advantage, turned the ball over only eight times, and led 18-12 in draw controls. Colleen Kazanjian made seven saves for the Bison, while two Kent State goalies combined for 12 stops.
Wolford, the 2023 MAC Offensive Player of the Year, added two assists to her five goals for a seven-point game. Gellin and Crumpton scored twice apiece. Six Bison had multi-goal games, and Krestinski (2-2-4) and Siverson (3-1-4) both had four-point games. Siverson added five draw controls and Aliza Thir had four. Catherine Dineen picked up a team-high three ground balls.
This was the first-ever meeting between Bucknell and Kent State, and now the Bison turn their attention to Patriot League play. Bucknell hosts Boston University in the league opener next Saturday.
