LEWISBURG, Pa. – Two of the Patriot League's top men's tennis teams engaged in a tight battle on Sunday afternoon, and Boston University prevailed 4-2 to stay unbeaten in Patriot League play. Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega and Tim Zelikovsky won singles matches for the Bison, who saw their four-match winning streak end and fell to 11-5 overall and 1-1 in the Patriot League.
The Terriers (15-7, 3-0 PL) have now won four straight, including wins over Bucknell, Navy, and Colgate in Patriot League play.
The match ultimately came down to a three-set battle at No. 1 singles, where Bucknell's Amar Tahirovic won a second-set tiebreaker to extend his match against Corey Craig. But Craig took the third set 6-2 to improve to 15-0 in dual matches this spring and clinch the verdict for his team.
Bucknell freshman Liam Kilmer won his first set in a tiebreaker after trailing 4-1 and was up 5-4 in the second at No. 5 singles when the Terriers clinched.
Bain was a 6-2, 7-6 winner against Alejandro Licea at No. 3 singles to improve to 21-8 on the season, and Zelikovsky moved to 24-2 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ben Letzer at No. 6.
Tahirovic and Brendan McDonald earned a 6-2 decision at No. 1 doubles, but Boston University won the other two by 6-3 and 6-4 counts to start the day with a 1-0 lead. The Terriers also received singles wins from Jakob Esterowitz at No. 2 and Gustavs Dambins at No. 4. Esterowitz won a tight 7-5, 7-6 decision over Adam Stavrakas.
Bucknell will play its next three contests on the road, starting next Sunday at Loyola.
