WORCESTER, Mass. – The Bucknell baseball team had no shortage of baserunners in Saturday's doubleheader at Holy Cross, but the Bison could not come up with enough clutch hits and dropped both games by scores of 4-2 and 6-4 at cold and windy Fitton Field.
Bucknell (10-16, 3-7 Patriot League) left the bases loaded four times in the seven-inning opener and then had 14 more LOBs in the nine-inning nightcap. The Bison totaled 17 hits and drew 12 walks on the day, but they went just 5-for-22 with runners in scoring position.
The loss in game one spoiled a very good start from Tyler O'Neill, who went the distance and was charged with only two earned runs. Jake Schultz, Graeme Carroll, and Connor Vucovich were all effective in relief in the nightcap.
These two teams split a doubleheader in Lewisburg last weekend, and Holy Cross (11-15, 3-3 PL) now leads the season series three games to one. The series finale is set for Sunday at Fitton Field, which has been a tough place to play for Bucknell in recent years. The Bison are 5-17 in Worcester since 2017.
GAME 1: Holy Cross 4, Bucknell 2
Holy Cross snapped a 2-2 tie with two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, and the Crusaders held on to take the opener.
After Luke LeMond (3-0) retired the red-hot Michael Trommer on a deep fly ball to the warning track to strand the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, the Crusaders put runners at the corners with one out in the bottom half. Trail runner Jimmy King broke for second, and Gianni Royer scampered home when the throw through to second skipped into center field. King moved around to third and then scored on a wild pitch.
Jack Toomey's solo homer with two outs in the first gave Holy Cross an early lead, but the Bison tied it in the second on Billy Fluharty's bases-loaded walk with one out. Holy Cross starter Alex Bryant buckled down and got an infield pop and a strikeout to limit Bucknell to one run.
Holy Cross picked up another two-out run on Braden Connors' base hit in the third, but the Bison quickly drew level again in the top of the fourth. Fluharty led off with a walk, moved up on a ground ball, and then stole third. After a strikeout, Holy Cross elected to pitch to Patriot League batting leader Sean Keys with first base open, and Keys made them pay with a ringing double into the right-field corner. After two more walks loaded the bases, LeMond replaced Bryant and induced a ground ball to keep the game tied.
LeMond later worked a 1-2-3 seventh to finish off a strong relief performance. He pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, striking out three while allowing one hit and two walks.
Andrew Swenson went 2-for-4 for the Bison, who finished with six hits in the game. Fluharty, Tyler Dunn, and Grant Voytovich drew two walks apiece.
Game 2: Holy Cross 6, Bucknell 4
Jacob Corson's fifth home run of the year staked Bison starter Mikey Myro to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning, but Holy Cross scored twice in the bottom of the third and four times in the sixth on the way to the doubleheader sweep.
Corson hit a blast over the wall in right-center off Holy Cross starter Jaden Wywoda. Toomey, who is just coming back from an injury, hit his second home run of the day with a man aboard to answer Corson's blow.
Bucknell loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth, but Wywoda struck out the dangerous Keys on a slow changeup on the eighth pitch of the at-bat. Bison reliever Jonathan Adelmann returned the favor in the bottom of the fourth when he came out of the bullpen and retired Toomey with one pitch to strand two runners.
Adelmann worked into the sixth before running into trouble. Two hit batsmen and a walk loaded the bases with one out, and Connors ripped a double to left-center to score two and break the tie. Brendan Jones singled in two more later in the inning to make it 6-2.
Bucknell got one of those runs back in the top of the seventh when Keys led off with another double and scored on Trommer's base hit up the middle. Payton Sutman took the mound and escaped further damage with a couple of fly balls. Shortstop King made a tumbling catch in shallow left field to leave the bases loaded in the eighth, and then the Bison rallied again in the ninth.
Voytovich was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and he moved up on a ground out and a Luke Nascimento single. Chris Morabito followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-4, but Matt Alexander's drive into right-center was snared by a diving Royer to end the game.
Alexander, Keys, and Voytovich all had two-hit games for the Bison, who collected 11 hits in the game. Connors and Chris Baillargeon logged two hits each for the Crusaders.
