LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Jack O'Malley turned in the best performance of his young career, and Jacob Corson and Sean Keys homered to help the Bucknell baseball team to a 5-2 win over Navy in the opener of a Saturday doubleheader at Depew Field. The Midshipmen won the nightcap 8-2 and will go for the series win on Sunday.
Bucknell's pitching was outstanding throughout the day, with O'Malley and Nick Mulvey teaming up for the win in game one, and Mikey Myro turning in a solid start in game two. In 14 innings of work on Saturday, the Bison staff combined for 17 strikeouts and only two walks, and six of the 10 runs allowed were unearned.
Navy took the opener of the four-game series 2-0 on Friday. The Midshipmen are now 10-9 on the season and 2-1 in the Patriot League, while Bucknell is 7-11, 1-2.
The series finale gets underway at 1 p.m. on Sunday, with coverage on ESPN+.
GAME 1: Bucknell 5, Navy 2
O'Malley (2-0) was outstanding in his third collegiate start and first Patriot League outing. He allowed only a pair of unearned runs on five hits while striking out nine with no walks in six innings. Mulvey fanned two more in the seventh and final inning for his fourth save of the season.
Corson staked O'Malley to an early lead when he blasted the first pitch of the afternoon from Matthew Shirah (0-3) over the wall in right for his fourth home run of the season. One inning later, Michael Trommer tripled with one out and then trotted home on a balk.
Two errors led to a pair of unearned runs as Navy tied the game in the bottom of the third, but the Bison took the lead right back on Keys' 405-foot homer in the bottom half. The two-run shot was his team-leading sixth of the season.
O'Malley seemed to get stronger as the game progressed. He struck out Navy's 2-3-4 hitters in order in the fifth and worked around a two-out double in the sixth to end his afternoon. He now has 26 strikeouts in 16.2 innings this season.
Bucknell picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Tyler Dunn led off with a single, moved up on a Billy Kender bunt and a Trommer single, and then scored on a Nic Adamo sacrifice fly.
Mulvey retired the first two batters in the seventh, yielded a single to Eduardo Diaz, and then struck out Logan Keller to end it.
Seven different Bison combined for the team's eight hits. Trommer was the lone Bucknell player with two. Diaz went 3-for-4 and Victor Izquierdo 2-for-3 for the Midshipmen, who finished with six hits.
GAME 2: Navy 8, Bucknell 2
Andrew Manning's three-run homer with two outs in the top of the first staked Navy to an early lead, and then righthander Brady Bendik took it from there. Bendik blanked the Bison for the first six innings before tiring in the seventh, but four unearned runs in the top of the seventh made a comeback unlikely.
Myro (2-1) pitched five solid innings, allowing four runs on four hits with five strikeouts and no walks. The Manning homer and a leadoff double by Brock Murtha in the fourth were the two big hits against Myro. Murtha moved up on a ground ball to the right side and scored on an Evan Brown sac fly to make it a 4-0 game.
Hudson Lehnertz's two-run single was the only hit in Navy's four-run rally in the top of the seventh and final inning. Bucknell finally got to Bendik in the bottom half, knocking him out after a Kender single, a Trommer double, and a Luke Nascimento RBI single. Lefty Evan Foster came in and retired all three batters he faced, with Billy Fluharty picking up an RBI on a ground out.
Bucknell outhit Navy 7-6 in the game, with Trommer collecting two more to cap off a four-hit day. Keller and Murtha both had two hits for Navy.
