Big First Inning Sends Bison Baseball to 8-2 Win over Navy in Series Finale

Navy's pitching had kept the Bucknell bats in check for much of the weekend, but the Bison erupted for seven runs on six hits in the opening inning, chasing starter Jackson Beattie (1-3).
With men at second and third and one out, Tyler Dunn started a parade of four straight run-scoring singles. Billy Kender, Michael Trommer, and Nic Adamo followed, and then after Billy Fluharty drew a walk from new pitcher Ryan Bibb, Andrew Swenson doubled over the rightfielder's outstretched glove to plate two more. Jacob Corson drew his second walk of the inning to load the bases, and Sean Keys walked to force in a run before Bibb retired the next two to strand the bases loaded and keep it 7-0.
Bibb and Nolan Jorgenson were effective in relief for Navy, allowing only one more run the rest of the way. That came in the third, when Corson singled with two outs and Keys followed with an RBI triple.
Meanwhile, the Bison hurlers pitched well with the big lead, walking only two batters while allowing seven hits. The freshman Adelmann, who pitched well in relief on Friday, earned the start two days later and pitched four scoreless innings, striking out five with just one walk.
Adelmann with a nasty slider to get the K and strand 2 in scoring position in the 4th. Great outing for the freshman after pitching in relief on Friday. Carroll will come out of the pen to start the 5th. #rayBucknell

Carroll (2-0) followed Adelmann and worked all the way into the ninth inning. He allowed two runs, one of which was unearned, on four hits with one strikeout and one walk in 4.1 innings. Hudson Lehnertz broke up the shutout with a two-out single in the sixth, and Eduardo Diaz plated Navy's second run on a ground out in the seventh.
Navy started the eighth inning with two singles, but Carroll got Lehnertz to hit into a 5-4 double play and then retired Jack Finningan on a ground ball to second. Brian Furey's pinch-hit single with one out in the ninth ended Carroll's day, and after Mulvey hit the first batter he faced, he got Evan Brown to roll into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.

Keys finished 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBIs, and Kender also had a two-hit game. Eight of Bucknell's nine starters collected at least one hit. Brock Murtha had two hits for Navy (10-10), which was held to seven hits – all singles – in the game.
These two teams will play a single game in Annapolis on Apr 17, with the winner claiming the season series. Bucknell won that rubber match last season, which served as the tiebreaker when the Bison and Midshipmen finished tied for second place. Bucknell then swept Navy in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals at Depew Field.
Bucknell will play a non-league game at Penn State on Wednesday, and then Holy Cross and Army will visit Depew Field for doubleheaders next Saturday and Sunday.
