Baseball Drops Series Opener to Navy, 2-0
3/15/2024 5:27:00 PM | Baseball
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell righthander Tyler O'Neill allowed only one run over six innings, but he was outdueled by the Navy tandem of Tyler Grenn and Landon Kruer as the Midshipmen prevailed 2-0 in the first of a four-game Patriot League series on Friday at windy Depew Field.
Bucknell and Navy came into the Patriot League opener with the top two offenses in the conference, with both teams averaging better than seven runs per game. But this one belonged to the pitchers, as the only two runs of the game came on sacrifice flies in the fourth and eighth innings.
O'Neill (0-3) had to navigate some traffic in the early innings as Navy put the leadoff man on base in each of the first four innings. The Midshipmen finally cashed in in the fourth after two walks and a single to start the inning. Andrew Manning raced home on Jack Finnegan's sac fly, but O'Neill did well to limit the damage thanks in part to the arm of his catcher. Nic Adamo, who had already gunned down a runner trying to steal second base in the second inning, picked Victor Izquierdo off first base, and then O'Neill retired Mac McCommons on a pop fly to end the threat.
Jonathan Adelmann replaced O'Neill to start the seventh and worked a 1-2-3 inning on only nine pitches. But Logan Keller tripled leading off the eighth, and Brock Murtha's sac fly gave Navy a big insurance run.
Meanwhile, Grenn (2-1) was outstanding for Navy, allowing only two hits with four strikeouts and no walks in 7.2 innings. Bucknell's biggest threats came in the first and eighth innings. Jacob Corson led off the bottom of the first with a double, and with one out Grant Voytovich smoked a ball to center, but it hung up for Hudson Lehnertz.
Billy Kender reached on a two-out error in the fourth, and then Grenn retired the next 10 Bison in a row. A throwing error allowed Adamo to reach to start the eighth, and with one out Andrew Swenson was hit by a pitch to flip the lineup around. Grenn struck out Corson for the second out, and then Kruer came out of the bullpen and retired the Patriot League's leading hitter Sean Keys on a pop-out to short.
Kruer, pitching at Depew Field for the first time since Bucknell's walk-off win in the deciding game of last year's Patriot League Tournament semifinal series, this time earned the save with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Connor Vucovich also worked a scoreless inning with a couple of strikeouts, but the Bison were shut out for the first time this season. Voytovich had Bucknell's only other hit, and Keys (20) and Tyler Dunn (8) both had hitting streaks snapped.
Bucknell and Navy are back at it for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
