JACKSONVILLE, FLA.- The Bucknell Bison softball team (9-15) dropped a doubleheader to North Florida (16-8) on Wednesday to finish spring break. The Orange & Blue fell 5-0 in game one and 2-1 in ten innings in game two.
North Florida used three solo home runs to power its attack in game one. Bucknell had opportunities but couldn't match the Ospreys' output. Madison Roukey pitched the entirety of game two and delivered a gem but the Bison offense stalled.
Game One Recap
Hunter Vestal started in the circle. UNF jumped out to an early lead with two solo home runs, including the leadoff hitter clubbing one. A walk and a single followed. Vestal prevented further damage with a fly-out.
UNF continued its offensive aggression in the second inning. The Ospreys loaded the bases with one out. Vestal avoided allowing any more runs by obtaining two more outs.
The Ospreys added another two runs in the third inning. Another leadoff home run started the scoring. A strikeout was followed by a walk and a double. Sarah Zimmerman replaced Vestal. A sacrifice fly occurred but another fly out ended the inning to keep the score at 4-0.
Bucknell obtained its first major threat of the game in the fifth inning. Brooke Popella walked, Annabella Hawkins singled with a short flare over third base, and Elena Horn singled past the shortstop. But three strikeouts prevented any runs.
Zimmerman pitched effectively until the sixth inning when UNF unlocked another insurance run. Two singles and a stolen base set the stage for a sacrifice fly.
Popella led off the seventh inning with a double but three outs followed to end the game.
Game Two Recap
Roukey started in the circle and ran into early trouble. North Florida continued its solo home run barrage when Glover launched a bomb over the left field fence.
North Florida threatened again in the second inning. The first three batters walked once and made two outs. The next two batters singled and walked to load the bases. Roukey remained calm and obtained a fielder's choice to end the inning.
The Bison tied the game in the fourth inning. Hilling launched a double to the right-center gap. Popella strolled to the plate with two outs and continued her impressive freshman campaign with a double to the same space. Hilling dashed across the plate to score.
UNF planned another scoring threat in the sixth inning. Reichert singled to the shortstop was called safe despite the ball beating her, and stole second. She advanced to throw when Smith's throw went into center field. She remained stationed at third base when Woods flew out to right field.
Bucknell nearly scored again in the seventh inning. Malone walked and Zimmerman was inserted as a pinch runner. Hawkins hit a slow roller to the shortstop. Zimmerman slid into second base and was called out, despite the replay showing her foot seemingly beating the throw. Angelina Seropian walked. UNF changed pitchers, and the tactic worked as Gardon grounded out.
Roukey shut down the Ospreys in 1-2-3 fashion to send the game to extra innings.
The Bison had its best scoring opportunity of the extra innings in the eighth frame. A leadoff strikeout started the inning. Jones pinch-hit for Speicher and doubled down the left-field line. Smith walked. Hilling hit into a fielder's choice and UNF threw to third base to nail the leading runner. Malone's strikeout ended the inning.
UNF got a runner to second base in its eighth inning but a spectacular catch from Malone turned into a double play. A single occurred and a wild pitch sent the runner to second. Reichert blasted a ball into deep left field. Malone tracked the ball and despite slamming her wrist into the unforgiving wall secured the ball and threw the sphere into the infield nabbing the runner who raced for home.
The Ospreys had a prime opportunity to end the game in the ninth inning. Jackson doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Channell walked and stole second. Roukey refused to panic and induced three outs to escape the deadly jam.
UNF ended the game in the tenth inning. The Ospreys laid down a surprise bunt and then hit a triple down the left-field line.
