Bucknell at a Glance
- The Bison men's tennis squad brings a three-match winning streak out to Southern California, where it will play three matches during Spring Break. Now 6-2 on the season, Bucknell is coming off a 6-1 win over St. Bonaventure in the first home outdoor match of the season.
- Freshman Will Robinson, filling in for the injured Brendan McDonald, teamed with Amar Tahirovic for the deciding doubles win against the Bonnies, and then Robinson blanked Arjun Piniprolu 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 to lead the singles charge. Bucknell is now 8-0 in the No. 6 spot in its eight spring duals.
- With his win at No. 5 singles last week, senior Tim Zelikovsky improved to a team-best 17-1 in singles, including an 8-0 mark in duals. With 59 career singles wins, Zelikovsky has moved into the top-10 on Bucknell's all-time list. Daniel Bednarek also won 59 matches from 2005-09. Zelikovsky brings a nine-match winning streak to the West Coast.
- Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega (15-6), Amar Tahirovic (14-4), Liam Kilmer (14-3), and Adam Stavrakas (12-6) also have double-digit win totals.
- Tahirovic, who plays in the No. 1 spot in both singles and doubles, has a team-best 19-4 doubles mark, including a 5-1 record in duals with McDonald. Bucknell has won the doubles point in seven of its eight matches this spring.
- Bucknell now has a 90-35 (.720) combined singles record and a 50-23 (.685) doubles mark this season.
- This is a young Bucknell squad, with only one senior (Zelikovsky) and no juniors on the roster. Â
- Second-year head coach Jason Cohen knows the West Coast well, as he spent the previous four seasons as the head coach at Caltech before coming to Bucknell.Â
- This will be the first-ever meeting between Bucknell and Westmont.
- The Warriors have dropped three straight duals to fall to 3-6 on the season. Most recently, they fell 4-1 to Fresno Pacific and 4-3 to Sewanee in a doubleheader on Saturday.
- Westmont is in its first year competing at the Division II level in the PacWest Conference. The Warriors moved up from NAIA, where last season they finished 10-10 and fell to Westcliff in the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament final. Â Â
- Logan Thompson leads the team with a 6-2 singles record in dual matches, including a 3-0 mark at No. 3. Austin Stone is 2-4 in the No. 1 singles position.
- Stone and Ethan Ha play No. 1 doubles, where they are 3-3. Thompson and Owen Vander Ark are 4-2 at No. 2.
- The Highlanders are 2-10 on the season but have won two of their last three. They defeated Hope International 4-0 in their most recent match on Feb. 27 and then had a March 2 contest against Portland canceled. UC Riverside will host another Patriot League squad, Boston University, on Tuesday before the Bison come in on Wednesday.
- Joshua Roth and Justin Lamy both picked up their first singles wins of the spring with straight-set victories at No. 1 and No. 2 against Hope International.
- UCR finished 6-16 overall and 1-5 in the Big West Conference last season. The Highlanders fell 4-0 to UC Davis in the Big West Tournament.
- The Bison and Highlanders have met twice previously, both times at Riverside. UCR won by 6-1 scorelines in both 2017 and 2018. Â
- This will be the first-ever meeting between Bucknell and Loyola Marymount.
- The Lions are 5-4 on the season after playing a string of close matches. Loyola Marymount posted back-to-back 4-3 wins over UC Irvine and San Diego State before falling 4-3 at Utah on Saturday. LMU will travel to Utah State on Sunday before hosting Bucknell on Thursday.
- The Lions finished 10-11 overall and 3-6 in the West Coast Conference last season.
- Yassine Smiej plays in the No. 1 singles spot for the Lions and had a 3-4 record at their last statistical report.
- After returning from the West Coast, the Bison will travel to Temple on Sunday, March 17 at noon.
- The next home match will be against Duquesne on Saturday, March 23 at 11 a.m.Â
