Bucknell at a Glance
- The Bison baseball squad is set to play its home opener this weekend when Saint Joseph's visits Depew Field on Saturday. The Bison and Hawks will now play one nine-inning game, and then the two teams will convene in Philadelphia for two games on Sunday. Bucknell will play another home game on Tuesday against Le Moyne before heading back south for a three-game series at Campbell.
- Bucknell is coming off a successful four-game series against Massachusetts in Colonial Heights, Va. The Bison took three of the four games, winning the first three before the Minutemen held on for dear life in the final inning to salvage game four.
- Bucknell won the series opener 9-7, as Nic Adamo drove in the go-ahead run in a three-run seventh-inning rally. The Bison took game two 7-4 as Adamo again knocked in the go-ahead run, they won game three 8-4 as Michael Trommer and Billy Kender drove in two runs apiece and Sean Keys delivered some insurance with a three-run homer.
- Keys homered twice in the UMass series. He now has three this season and 17 in his career, moving him into 13th place on Bucknell's career list.
- Graeme Carroll earned Patriot League Pitcher of the Week honors after two outstanding relief efforts against the Minutemen. Carroll recorded saves in both of his appearances in the series, and he did not allow a hit while striking out five and walking only one in five innings. In Saturday's 7-4 win over the Minutemen, Carroll inherited a first-and-third, no-out jam in the top of the seventh (and final) inning. He proceeded to record a strikeout, a short fly ball, and another strikeout to end the game and notch his second career save and first since 2022 against Duke. The following day, Carroll pitched the final four innings without yielding a hit in Bucknell's 8-4 victory.
- In each of Bucknell's four victories this season, a young Bison pitcher has earned his first collegiate win. Freshman Jack O'Malley got on the board the previous weekend against Towson, and freshman Jonathan Adelmann and sophomores Hadley Maxwell and Mikey Myro joined them in the win column against UMass.
- Keys (1.519), Kender (1.224), and Jacob Corson (.976) all have a lofty OPS in the early going. Keys is slashing .435/.606/.913 through seven games. In addition to his three home runs, he has eight RBIs, has walked five times, and has been hit by five pitches. Kender has drawn a team-high eight walks and has a stellar .412/.577/.647 slash line. He has two doubles and a triple among his seven hits. Corson is hitting .308 with a double, triple, and homer, and he leads the team with nine RBIs from the leadoff spot.
- Adamo is hitting .444 with seven RBIs in his five starts, and his catching platoon partner Luke Nascimento is also off to a good start to his freshman campaign with three hits in seven ABs. The two Bison backstops are a combined 11-for-25 (.440) on the season.
- Another freshman who has impressed at the plate is Andrew Swenson, who is 4-for-9 with a homer, five RBIs, and a couple of walks in three starts.
- Bucknell's .269 team batting average and .404 on-base percentage is the best in the Patriot League through two weeks of play. Adamo (.444) and Keys (.435) rank 1-2 in the league in batting average, and Keys leads the PL in OBP (.606), slugging (.913), and OPS (1.519).
- Head coach Scott Heather is in his 12th season at the helm, tying him with Bill Lane (1946-57) as the third-longest tenured coach in program history. Heather's 205 career wins are second-most in team history, trailing only Hall-of-Famer Gene Depew (591).
- The Hawks dropped a 15-9 slugfest at home against Rutgers on Tuesday to fall to 2-3 on the season. They took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second but could not overcome the Scarlet Knights' 11-run third.
- Saint Joseph's opened the season with a 6-5 home win over Canisius before winning once in three games at the One Spartanburg Inc. Baseball Classic. The Hawks defeated Gardner Webb 6-2 before falling to Presbyterian (3-2, 10 inn.) and USC Upstate (21-5).
- Ryan Weingartner has been Saint Joseph's top bat thus far. The sophomore brings a streak of four straight multi-hit games to Lewisburg, and he has homered in each of his last three contests. Weingartner is slashing .417/.417/.958 for a 1.375 OPS.
- Ryan Picollo, the son of Kansas City Royals general manager J.J. Picollo, homered twice in the season-opening win over Canisius and has three on the season.
- Like Bucknell, Saint Joseph's boasts this week's conference Pitcher of the Week. Will McCausland earned the Atlantic 10 honor after tossing six shutout innings with 10 strikeouts against Gardner-Webb on Friday. McCausland has 18 Ks and only one walk to go with a 1.64 ERA in two starts this season.
- Saint Joseph's won its first-ever Atlantic 10 regular-season championship last season. The Hawks finished 28-24-1, including a 17-7 record in the A-10. They were especially hard to beat at home, where they finished 20-5-1.
- That home tie came against Bucknell, a 7-7 game that was called after six innings due to rain. A two-run double by Michael Trommer and a three-run home by Sean Keys helped stake the Bison to a 6-0 lead. The Hawks scored four in the second and three in the fourth to go ahead, but Bucknell tied it in the sixth when Jacob Terwilliger scored on a passed ball.
- Bucknell is 4-9-1 all-time against Saint Joseph's in a series that dates back to 1963.
- The Dolphins have had a long history of baseball success and are now in their first year back at the Division I level, playing in the Northeast Conference. The Le Moyne baseball program previously competed at the Division I level from 1988 to 2011, earning appearances in the NCAA Championship in 1989, 2003, 2004, and 2007.
- Le Moyne is off to a 2-5 start, winning once in a four-game series at Houston Christian and once in a three-game set at Radford.
- The Dolphins finished 34-22 last season, including a 14-6 record in the Northeast-10 Conference and a NE10 Southwest Division title. They were an at-large selection to the NCAA Division II Tournament and won the East Regional #2 before falling to Southern New Hampshire in the East Super Regional.
- Nick Nevins has led the team at the plate so far with a .333 average, a home run and five RBIs. Wyatt Patchett (.316) and Jason Boule (.300) are also hitting .300 or better, and Brody Keneston has a team-high nine RBIs.
- Syracuse native Adam Sullivan returns after earning NE10 Rookie of the Year, First Team All-NE10, and All-East Regional honors.
- Max Parker, Jacob Crystal, and Jordan Goldmann have all made two starts each on the mound. Parker leads the way with a 4.15 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP, and 14 strikeouts in 13.0 innings.
- Bucknell and Le Moyne have met 12 times, with the Dolphins winning each of the last six to take an 8-4 lead in the series. The two sides have not met since 2011, when Le Moyne swept a doubleheader, 4-3 and 4-0, in Syracuse.
- Bucknell's last wins over Le Moyne came in 1998, when Gene Depew's squad won 5-1 and 10-1 in a doubleheader in Lewisburg.
- After taking on Saint Joseph's and Le Moyne, the Bison head to Buies Creek, N.C., for a three-game series against Campbell. The two teams have never before met on the baseball diamond.
- The Fighting Camels are 6-2 this season, including two wins over No. 17 UC Santa Barbara, a mid-week win over No. 11 East Carolina, and a three-game sweep of Ohio University. A year ago, Campbell finished 46-14, 20-4 at home, and won two games in the Columbia Regional after claiming its second straight Big South championship. Â
