COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. – Mikey Myro became the fourth Bucknell pitcher this season to record his first career win and Graeme Carroll tossed four hitless innings in relief for his second save of the weekend, helping the Bison baseball squad to a doubleheader split with Massachusetts on Sunday at Shepherd Stadium. Bucknell won the opener 8-4 and the Minutemen took game two 8-6, and the Bison took three of the four games in the series to improve to 4-3 on the season.
Sophomore Hadley Maxwell and freshmen Jack O'Malley and Jonathan Adelmann had already earned their first collegiate wins in 2024, and the sophomore Myro joined them on Sunday as he continued his outstanding start to the season.
Freshman shortstop Andrew Swenson also notched a milestone with his first career home run in game two. Earlier in the day, Sean Keys moved into 13th place on Bucknell's career home runs list with his third of the season and 17th of his career.
Bucknell is now set to make its home debut next weekend with a doubleheader against Saint Joseph's. The Bison and Hawks are slated to play two at Depew Field on Saturday and a single game in Philadelphia on Sunday.
GAME 1 (7 inn.): Bucknell 8, Massachusetts 4
Michael Trommer and Billy Kender drove in two runs apiece and Keys provided some insurance with a three-run fourth-inning homer as Bucknell won its fourth straight game. Relievers Myro and Carroll were lights out in relief, covering the final 6 2/3 innings after starter O'Malley struggled with his command in his first career start.
An RBI fielder's choice by Kender and a big two-out, two-run single by Trommer staked the Bison to a three-run lead in the top of the first. UMass countered with four runs without the benefit of a hit in the bottom of the first. Five Minutemen drew walks and four of them scored. It might have been worse, but Myro induced an infield pop and a fly ball to center to strand runners at the corners.
Myro worked two more scoreless frames, getting a strikeout and a flyout to leave the bases loaded in the third. Myro was in line for the win when the Bison took the lead with two runs in the top of the third. Keys led off with a double, Grant Voytovich singled him to third, and Tyler Dunn tied it with a sac fly. Kender followed with an RBI double to give Bucknell a 5-4 lead.
Keys broke it open in the fourth. Luke Nascimento singled, Jacob Corson walked, and Keys blasted Dylan Terwilliger's offering over the wall in right-center.
Carroll, who retired all three batters he faced to earn the save in Saturday's win, allowed only two baserunners while striking out three in his four innings of work on Sunday.
Bucknell outhit UMass 7-3 in the game. Keys reached base in all four of his plate appearances, finishing 2-for-2 with the homer, double, walk, and hit by pitch.
GAME 2 (7 inn.): Massachusetts 8, Bucknell 6
Corson and Swenson belted home runs, but Mike Gervasi's pinch-hit grand slam in the top of the sixth inning helped the Minutemen salvage the final game of the series.
Nolan Tichy's two-run homer in the top of the first put UMass in front, but those were the only runs conceded by Bucknell freshman starter Jake Schultz. He struck out five and walked two in his four innings of work.
Dante Pavone made his collegiate debut in the fifth and allowed a run on a Marc Willi sacrifice fly. The Bison pulled within 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth when Nic Adamo led off with a single and scored on Swenson's long ball.
The Minutemen broke it open with five runs in the sixth, keyed by Gervasi's grand slam and an RBI single by Matt Travisano.
Freshman Dylan Radtke pitched a 1-2-3 top of the seventh in his debut, and then down 8-2 going into their final at-bat, the Bison made things interesting with a four-run rally.
Chris Morabito and Swenson started the inning with walks against former Bison Jacob Terwilliger, and then Corson hit a three-run homer to make it 8-5. Keys followed with a base hit, went to third on an error, and scored on Kender's single. Adamo's two-out walk loaded the bases and put the tying run on second, but Charlie Devin retired Morabito on a fly ball to center to end the game.
