LEWISBURG, Pa. – For a third time this spring the Bucknell women's tennis team secured a dramatic 4-3 victory, and this time it was Tyne Miller with the match-clinching win over Villanova on court four. After the two teams sat tied at 3-3, the senior defeated her opponent in three sets to help the Bison improve to 3-1 during their current homestand.
Bucknell earned wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles as well, and Miller also helped the Bison clinch the doubles point earlier in the dual.
Madi Sebulsky and Caroline Marcus scored a quick 6-1 victory over Bella Steffen and Jenna Stevens at third doubles to get the dual started, but the Wildcats answered with a win at No. 1 doubles. The first point of the match came down to Miller and Anna Lajos, who came through with a 6-4 victory over Emi Callahan and Maggie Gehrig, the younger sister of current Bucknell men's swimmer John Gehrig.
The Wildcats tied things up at 1-1 with an early win at No. 1 singles, and they answered again after Abby Platt's decisive 6-2, 6-2 win over Miriam Gondorova on court three with their own win on court six to tie it up again at 2-2.
Bucknell and Villanova split the next two decisions as well. Jaycie Mair won 6-2, 7-5 over Callahan, then Lajos battled to a narrow 7-6 (3), 5-7, 2-6 defeat against Gehrig, leaving the dual up for grabs with one match still ongoing.
Miller went three sets against junior Valieriia Kornieva and prevailed with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 victory, and Bucknell improved to 4-6 while sending Villanova to a 2-7 record.
The Bison are back at the Central PA Tennis Center Sunday morning to host Le Moyne at 10 a.m.
