Women's Lacrosse Comeback Falls Short at Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Senior Emily Baird scored a career-high five goals and the Bucknell women's lacrosse team pulled within one goal in the fourth quarter after a slow start, but Villanova answered with a late flurry of its own and held off the Bison 16-12 on Saturday at snowy Villanova Stadium.Â
Villanova entered the game receiving votes in the IWLCA national poll after dropping a one-goal game against No. 17 USC in its season opener last week. The Wildcats burst out of the gates with seven straight goals before the Bison settled down in the second quarter. Tatumn Kohlbrenner got Bucknell on the board just under four minutes into the period, and the Bison scored three of the final four goals of the half to pull within 8-3 at intermission.
Bucknell dominated the third quarter, outshooting the Wildcats 14-8 and outscoring them 5-2. A tally from Allie Boyce and then two straight from Baird closed the gap to 8-6, and it was still a two-goal margin at 10-8 after Megan Krestinski scored with 26 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Baird's fourth goal of the day 2:42 into the fourth drew Bucknell within a single goal at 10-9, but All-Big East attacker Sydney Pappas scored just over a minute later, igniting a six-goal flurry for Villanova. By the time Mary Moore scored with 2:48 remaining, the hosts had a commanding 16-8 lead.Â
Taylor Kopan, Caroline Sheridan, and Baird added three late goals for the Bison, but there was not enough time left for a second big comeback.Â
Villanova finished with a narrow 33-31 shot advantage, while Bucknell led 20-18 in ground balls. Pappas led the Wildcats with four goals, while Moore tallied three.Â
Â
Bucknell goalies Colleen Kazanjian and Julia Dembowitz both saw time in net. Dembowitz had three saves, and Kazanjian tallied four for the Bison. Villanova goalie Cate Gallagher had 12 saves for the Wildcats.
