2/12/2024 9:27:00 PM | Men's Basketball
LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Elvin Edmonds IV set career highs with 20 points and 10 rebounds, but a shorthanded Bucknell men's basketball squad dropped a 71-63 overtime decision to Lehigh on Monday night at Sojka Pavilion. The Bison fell to 7-6 in Patriot League play, with three of the six losses coming in OT, while suddenly resurgent Lehigh improved to 6-7 and pulled within one game of fourth place.
The Bison took a 59-58 lead with 25.9 seconds to go in regulation on a Jack Forrest three-pointer. The Mountain Hawks tied it on a Dominic Parolin free throw with 12.3 seconds remaining, and Forrest's contested jumper was off the mark as time expired in regulation. Tyler Whitney-Sidney converted a 3-point play on the first possession of overtime, and Lehigh never trailed in the extra session as the Bison went 1-for-7 from the field.
Forrest scored all 16 of his points in the second half and overtime after sitting out most of the first half with foul trouble. Ian Motta added eight points and a career-high nine rebounds, Pip Ajayi tied season-highs with eight points and three blocks, and Ruot Bijiek contributed six points, five rebounds, and a career-high tying four blocks.
The Bison played without 7-foot center Noah Williamson and starting guard Josh Bascoe due to injury. Those two combined for 41 points in Bucknell's 86-80 win at Lehigh on Jan. 10.
Joshua Ingram scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Mountain Hawks. Burke Chebuhar had 14 points and eight rebounds, and Whitney-Sidney tallied 13 points off the bench.
Bucknell scrapped its way through the first half, keeping within one point at 29-28 despite shooting 33.3 percent from the field. Lehigh went 2-for-10 from 3-point range in the first half, then proceeded to hit three straight from downtown in the first 2:48 second half to grab the largest lead of the night for either side at 38-28.
Bucknell shot right back with buckets from Forrest, Ajayi, and Edmonds to pull within 38-34, and the game was tight from there. Bijiek's best stretch of the night helped the Bison take the lead just past the midway point of the half. Bijiek scored with a jump hook in the lane, he put back a miss to give Bucknell a 47-46 lead, then he nabbed another offensive rebound and kicked it to Forrest in the right corner for a 3-pointer.
Edmonds' pull-up jumper at the end of the shot clock kept it a four-point margin at 52-48 before Chebuhar's 3-point play ignited a quick 5-0 run for the Mountain Hawks. The lead changed hands five more times on the odd number over the next four minutes. Dominic Parolin's layup gave Lehigh a 57-56 lead with 2:16 left, and the Bison missed opportunities to go back in front after a missed front end of a 1-and-1 and an offensive goaltending call that was upheld on review with 36 seconds remaining.
Keith Higgins Jr. split a pair of free throws, and then Forrest swished a go-ahead 3-pointer with 25 seconds to play. Parolin was fouled in the low post with 12 seconds to go but could only manage 1 of 2 to keep the game tied at 59, and then after a sideline inbounds with 1.3 seconds left, Forrest's fadeaway 3-pointer went off the iron.
The Bison got a bit unlucky in the overtime period, as twice they blocked shots, only for the ball to fall right a brown shirt for points. Forrest's fourth 3-pointer of the night pulled the Bison within 66-63 with 1:17 left, and then the defense forced a shot-clock violation. Bucknell could not take advantage, however, as Higgins broke up Edmonds' bounce pass to a cutting Motta in the lane, and Cam Gillus hit two free throws at the other end with 32 seconds left. After two more Bison misses, Lehigh finished it off at the foul line.
Bucknell shot 35.3 percent from the field, hitting 7 of 28 from downtown. Lehigh was just 5-for-20 from deep and finished at 35.4 percent overall. Bucknell's nine blocked shots contributed to the low percentage. The Mountain Hawks had a decided edge at the foul line, where they outscored the Bison 20-8.
Lehigh finished with a 47-45 rebounding edge, although Bucknell led 15-10 in second-chance points.
Bucknell fell to 0-3 in overtime games this season, hitting just 5-for-22 (.227) from the field in the three OT periods.
After playing twice in three days, the Bison will now have some extra time off to prepare for first-place Colgate. Bucknell travels to Hamilton, N.Y., on Saturday at 2 p.m.
