Rucker Named Team MVP, Nearly Two Dozen Honored at Bison Gridiron Club Awards Banquet
12/9/2024 5:40:00 PM | Football
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Record-setting quarterback Ralph Rucker IV added some more hardware to his trophy case on Sunday evening when he received the Bison Gridiron Club Award as the Bucknell football team's Most Valuable Player at the 62nd Annual Bison Gridiron Club Awards Banquet. Rucker was one of 23 players to receive awards at the year-end celebration, which was held in the Terrace Room on campus.
One of the highlights of the evening was a presentation honoring the late Doug Williams '63, a former Bison quarterback and a devoted supporter of the team until his passing last February. The office of the strength and conditioning coach inside the new Pascucci Team Center has been named in Doug's memory. Several members of Doug's family were in attendance, and his wife, Jane, was presented with the game ball from the season-ending win over Colgate.
Rucker played a major role in that 48-34 win over the Raiders, and in addition to the MVP award he also received the Keating-Rieu Award as the Outstanding Player in the Colgate Game. He finished 31-for-45 for a school-record 457 yards and five touchdown passes. Bucknell had never had a 400-yard passer in any game in team history. Rucker set the previous mark of 387 against Colgate last season, giving him 824 yards in two career games against the Raiders.
It was Rucker's second straight five-touchdown game, tying the school record, and that helped him blow by the team records for TD passes in a season (25) and career (46). Scott Auchenbach had held the Bucknell career mark of 42 touchdown passes since 1989. Rucker also broke the Bucknell single-season record for passing yards with 2,826 and his career total of 5,363 in just two seasons ranks second all-time.
Rucker threw for 300+ yards four times this season, and his .672 completion percentage set a new school record, just above the previous mark of .671 by Marcello Trigg in 2008, and that was the fifth-best mark in Patriot League history. He led the Patriot League in passing yards, passing touchdowns, and passing efficiency, as he finished the year with 25 TD passes and only seven interceptions.
Rucker became the first Bison in 30 years to be selected as the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, and he was selected as a finalist for the Walter Payton Award, which is presented by Stats Perform to the FCS Offensive Player of the Year.
Rucker's quarterback compatriot, senior Michael Hardyway, was presented the Bobby Pangburn Memorial Award for "commitment, dedication, and unqualified friendship." Hardyway, who is also a valued leader across campus and in the community, filled in admirably in the Cornell game with Rucker out with an injury. He threw for 214 yards and two touchdowns against the Big Red.
One of Rucker's favorite targets this season was wideout Eric Weatherly, who received the Big Blue Award as the team's Outstanding Back or Receiver. Weatherly earned First Team All-Patriot League honors after hauling in a school-record 75 passes for 865 yards and eight touchdowns. The 865 yards are sixth-most in a season in team history, and the eight TD catches are tied for fifth most.
Weatherly ranked second in the Patriot League in both receptions and receiving yards, and his eight receiving TDs were the most in the league.
Weatherly had three 100-yard receiving games this season, capped by a sensational performance against Colgate in which he logged 11 catches for 174 yards and two touchdowns. One game earlier against Holy Cross, he collected 10 balls for 129 yards and two scores. In two seasons at Bucknell after transferring from Duke, Weatherly has 15 receiving touchdowns, which are tied for fifth-most on the team's career chart.
Freshman running back Tariq Thomas earned the Stuart M. Smith Memorial Award as the team's Outstanding Newcomer. A Second Team All-Patriot League selection, Thomas burst onto the collegiate scene this fall to become one of the league's top running backs. He was picked as one of 25 finalists for the Jerry Rice Award, presented to the FCS Rookie of the Year and became Bucknell's first Patriot League Rookie of the Year since quarterback Brandon Wesley in 2010.
Thomas had back-to-back 100-yard games against Georgetown (136) and Lafayette (141), and he had two-touchdown games against Georgetown and Penn. Thomas finished the season with 783 yards and a 4.7 yards-per-carry average. Thomas was a four-time Patriot League Rookie of the Week, and he ranked fifth in the Patriot League in rushing yards despite missing one game due to injury and playing through the injury in the last two weeks of the season.
Leading the group up front was junior center John Ohnegian, who received the John Campana Award as the Outstanding Offensive Lineman for the second year in a row. Elected team captain as a junior, Ohnegian started all 12 games this season, 11 at center and one at left tackle. He was a Second Team All-Patriot League honoree, and he was also named Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Three other offensive linemen were also honored at the banquet. Fifth-year senior Casey Stephenson received the Theodore S. Ratkus Leadership Award for "character, courage, and commitment to team play." Senior Mason Jones was presented the C. Dale Wolfe Recognition Award as the team's Most Inspirational Player. Jake Guy was one of eight seniors to receive the Tom Gadd Coaches' Award.
Guy, running back Paul Neel, tight end Christian Spugnardi, defensive linemen Aneesh Vyas and Jack Barnes, and defensive backs John Schlendorf, Mason Taylor, and Chris Sims all earned the Tom Gadd Coaches' Award for their inspiring play and leadership.
On the defensive side of the ball, the top performance awards went to sophomore linebacker Gavin Willis, who earned the Clarke Hinkle Award as the Outstanding Defensive Back or Linebacker; senior Cade Rooney, who was the recipient of the George Rieu Award as the Outstanding Defensive Lineman; and senior linebacker Brad Jamison, who earned the Bub Morgan Award for Tenacity.
Willis backed up a strong freshman season with a monster sophomore campaign, which resulted in Second Team All-Patriot League honors. He started all 12 games at linebacker and tallied 129 tackles, which is tied for the ninth-highest total in team history. He ranks fourth in FCS in tackles per game (10.8) and leads all NCAA divisions with five fumble recoveries. He also collected 11 tackles for loss, two sacks, five pass breakups, and two blocked kicks this season.
Willis was named the FCS National Defensive Player of the Week after his performance in the win over Fordham. In that game he made 13 tackles, including four for loss, and he recovered two fumbles, one of which he returned 79 yards for a touchdown. Willis recorded double-digit tackles seven times, with a high of 19 against Cornell, and he was a three-time Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week.
Rooney started all 12 games on the defensive line and tallied 34 tackles, including 3.5 for loss. His interception off Willis' pass deflection was one of the biggest plays in the win over Colgate. The Bison were protecting a seven-point lead late in the fourth quarter, and one play after the turnover Rucker hit Weatherly on a 44-yard touchdown to ice it.
Jamison repeated as a Second Team All-Patriot League honoree in 2024. He tallied 60 tackles and three sacks this season, and he also forced a key fumble in the Lehigh win. He made a season-high eight tackles against Georgetown and finished his career with 176 tackles and six sacks in 43 games.
Senior safety Alex Smith won the George L. McCaughey Award as the Outstanding Player in the Lafayette Game. The Bison turned in one of their best defensive performances of the season in the 21-14 victory against the defending Patriot League champs, holding the Leopards to 184 passing yards and just two scores on the first possession of each half. Smith tied for team-high honors with 13 tackles, he had a fourth-quarter sack on third down that forced the punt that set up Bucknell's go-ahead touchdown, and he also had two fourth-quarter pass breakups. Both of those came deep in Bison territory, the last of which came in the end zone on the game's final play.
Sophomore TJ Cadden was named Special Teams MVP after a historic season as a kickoff and punt returner. Cadden wrote headlines early in the season with three return touchdowns in a span of four weeks in September. He returned punts for touchdowns in wins over VMI and Marist, and his electrifying 100-yard kickoff return was one of the biggest plays in Bucknell's double-overtime win at Lehigh. Cadden became the first Bison ever to have three return touchdowns in one season, and he joined A.J. Kizekai (2008 vs. Lafayette) as the only Bucknell players with a 100-yard return.
Cadden, who suffered a season-ending injury in the Lafayette game on Nov. 2, also had three receiving touchdowns, coming against VMI, Marist, and Cornell. He caught 27 passes for 378 yards.
The Bucknell coaching staff awards three Scout Team Player of the Year awards at the end of each season. This year's recipients were freshman tight end Caden Allard on offense, senior linebacker Aidan Catania on defense, and sophomore safety Charlie McIntyre on special teams.
It was an exciting turnaround season for the Bison football squad. One year after finishing in last place in the Patriot League, Bucknell went 6-6 overall and 4-2 in league play. The Bison were still alive for the league championship in the final week of the season and finished in third place, one game behind Lehigh and Holy Cross.
A total of 63 Bison were awarded varsity letters following the 2024 campaign, including 22 first-timers and a rare five-time letterman in Danny Meuser. Eleven seniors received their fourth varsity letter: Smith, Sims, Schlendorf, Rooney, Barnes, Jamison, Jones, Stephenson, Spugnardi, Justin Fisher, and Fredrick Sturgis.
