LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's tennis enjoyed a tremendous fall season, highlighted by two championships at the Patriot League ITA Conference Masters qualifier, and two first-year players appeared in the latest ITA singles rankings. Nelson Alapi is ranked 118th, and Shiv Singh is one spot behind at No. 119.
The Bison combined for a stellar 74-20 (.787) singles record across seven fall tournaments. Alapi (11-1) and Singh (8-1) turned in two of the team's best singles marks in their debut campaigns, and since both players' lone losses came against opponents from Division III Carnegie Mellon at the Tartans' home tournament, they are considered to be unbeaten in the ITA rankings.
Amar Tahirovic, the team's No. 1 player, went 11-2 this fall, with the losses a three-setter to Penn State's Loren Byers in the main draw at the ITA Northeast Regional, and to Notre Dame All-American Sebastian Dominko in the quarterfinals of the ITA Conference Masters Championships in Georgia. Tahirovic fell one win shy of qualifying for the NCAA Singles Championship.
Tahirovic won both the singles and doubles titles at the Patriot League ITA Masters Qualifier. In the singles final, he won a three-setter from teammate Adam Stavrakas, who went 11-3 this fall. Tahirovic and Brendan McDonald took the Patriot League doubles crown and won a match at the ITA event in Georgia.
Nine of Bucknell's 10 players had winning singles records this fall and all 10 were at least .500. Alapi, Stavrakas, and Tahirovic tied for the team lead with 11 wins, followed by Singh and Liam Kilmer (8-1) with eight. Freshman Felix Steindl finished 7-2.
McDonald (9-3) and Stavrakas (7-2) had the top two doubles records.
Bucknell starts its dual-match schedule on Jan. 25 against Saint Francis at the Central PA Tennis Center in South Williamsport.
