Brandt, Lapworth Earn Major Awards as Three Bison Named to All-Patriot League First Team
11/7/2024 2:30:00 PM | Men's Soccer
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Junior goalkeeper Freddie Lapworth and head coach Dave Brandt earned major awards, and two others joined Lapworth on the All-Patriot League First Team as the Patriot League announced its men's soccer postseason honors on Thursday. Lapworth was named Goalkeeper of the Year, and Brandt was honored as Coach of the Year.
Â
Junior midfielder Jimmy Pombor and senior defender Aidan Lawlor joined Lapworth as All-Patriot League First Team honorees. The trio are the first Bucknell players to be named to the First Team since Matt Thorsheim in the 2021 Spring season.
Â
This is the fifth time a Bucknell coach has been selected as the Coach of the Year, and Brandt becomes the third different coach in Bison history to be honored. In his third year as head coach, Brandt led the Bison to a Patriot League regular-season co-championship with Boston University and its first winning season in Patriot League play since 2017. The Bison finished the regular season with a 6-6-5 overall record and a 4-1-4 Patriot League record.
Â
Bucknell enters the Patriot League tournament as the No. 2 seed, its highest since the 2009 Bison finished alone in first in the regular season. It's been quite a turnaround for the 2024 squad. The team finished at the bottom of the table a year ago and was picked T-9th in the Patriot League preseason poll.Â
Â
Boston University earned the No. 1 seed in the Patriot League Tournament, holding the tiebreaker with a 1-0 win over the Bison earlier this season. Bucknell clinched a top-two seed with a draw with Lafayette in its second-to-last match of the season, and the Bison secured a co-regular-season title with another draw at Loyola on Tuesday. .
Â
Lapworth becomes Bucknell's third Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year, and he earns his first All-Patriot League First Team selection. Lapworth started and played every minute of all 17 games this season after making 17 total starts in his first two collegiate seasons. Last year, an injury kept Lapworth sidelined midway through the season.
Â
Lapworth and the Bison led the Patriot League with seven shutouts, three more than the next closest team. His seven shutouts rank 11th in Division I. Lapworth ranked second in the league with a 1.06 goals-against average (GAA) and a .766 save percentage. Only Lafayette's Griffin Hunt held a better GAA at 1.00 in four fewer matches played, and only Holy Cross's Josh Tubbs had a higher save percentage at .800 in eight fewer matches played. Lapworth is just two shutouts away from tying Paul Sinnenburg in 10th on Bucknell's all-time shutouts list. Â
Â
Lawlor also notches his first Patriot League honor with a First Team selection. The senior center back made 15 starts in his first three seasons as a Bison before making 11 starts and 14 appearances this season. Lawlor provided the assist for Waldemar Kattrup's late match-winning goal over Army on October 20.
Â
Lawlor played a big role in Bucknell's defensive performance throughout the season. The Bison led the Patriot League, allowing just 18 goals in its 17 matches for a 1.06 GAA. In Patriot League action, the Bison allowed just five goals for a 0.56 GAA. Only Lehigh, Cornell, St. Francis, and St. Bonaventure scored multiple goals against the Bison this season. Â
Â
Pombor earns his first All-Patriot League honor in his first season for the Bison after transferring from Lock Haven. Pombor settled in nicely, playing as a holding midfielder. Pombor, Lapworth, and Ben Sheffield were the only Bison to start in all 17 games this season.
Â
Pombor came up with one of Bucknell's biggest moments of the season. Deadlocked with Colgate, Pombor combined with Drew Roskos for a sweet goal in the 83rd minute to give the Bison a 1-0 victory. The win put the Bison in first place in the Patriot League at the time and played a big role in helping Bucknell secure a top-two seed in the tournament.
Â
With a No. 2 seed in the tournament, the Bison earned a first-round bye and will host a Patriot League semifinal against the highest remaining seed on Tuesday, Nov. 12. Â
