WASHINGTON, D.C.- The student-athletes of Bucknell field hockey are much more than goal scorers, assist providers, and shot blockers; they are active members in their communities. This sentiment is symbolized by senior Isabella Pavlides who was recently honored by the NFCR (National Foundation for Cancer Research) as a Youth Ambassador at the National Foundation for Cancer Research Global Summit & Award Ceremony on Oct. 18.Â
Pavlides and her mother Shereen Pavlides (host of the popular show Cooking with Shereen) were honored for their role in raising money and awareness for cancer research. It is a cause near and dear to their hearts as Esther Procacci Pavlides (Shereen's mother-in-law and Isabella's grandmother) was diagnosed at the age of 70 with pancreatic cancer. She was given a six-month span to live but buckled the odds through determination, a strong faith, and her medical efforts to live seven years after its discovery. Esther was previously a breast cancer survivor of 40 years.Â
The mother and daughter duo were part of The Future of Cancer Research Panel along with several doctors. The panel focused on each person's views on the needs and trends of future cancer research, covering topics such as the growing importance of early detection technologies, the challenges posed by drug resistance, and the need for greater collaboration between the public and private sectors to accelerate the development and delivery of innovative treatments.
"Attending the National Foundation for Cancer Research Global Summit & Award Ceremony was such an amazing experience," said Pavlides. "This is a cause very close to my heart, as my grandmother battled pancreatic cancer for seven years while physicians were working with different scientists and enrolled her in trials to help extend her life. Money raised helps fund the NFCR in their efforts to continue their research and find cures. With the help of my teammates, our Play4TheCure campaign was a huge success. I am proud to be recognized as a youth ambassador for NFCR to help make a difference."
Bucknell Field Hockey helped raise over $31,000 through the Play4TheCure format - an amount which made up nearly half of the $80,000 raised at the time in 2023. The Bison's home game against Miami (OH) served as the Play4The Cure Game. It proved a banner day with Bucknell winning 2-1 over the MAC powerhouse and with the help of some generous sponsors, Shereen put together a significant prize package and offered that any donation through her NFCR/Play4TheCure fundraising page would be entered into a drawing for the giveaway.
"Just because you're diagnosed with cancer, doesn't mean you give up," said Shereen. "Keep Fighting! Time allows the scientists and doctors to research and develop cures and without funding, their efforts aren't possible."
