Men’s Soccer Finishes as Patriot League Regular-Season Co-Champs after 0-0 Draw at Loyola

BALTIMORE, Md. – Despite a handful of terrific chances in the final 18 minutes of the match, the Bucknell men's soccer team settled for a 0-0 draw at Loyola on Tuesday night at the Ridley Athletic Complex. That result, along with Boston University's 1-1 tie at Holy Cross, means the Bison and Terriers finish the regular season tied for first place with 16 points and 4-1-4 records.
Boston University holds the head-to-head tiebreaker and will be the No. 1 seed for the PenFed Credit Union Patriot League Tournament. Bucknell will be the No. 2 seed and will have a bye into the semifinal round. The Bison will host a semifinal game at Emmitt Field next Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 6 p.m.
This Saturday's quarterfinal round will feature No. 3 American (4-2-3, 15 pts.) hosting No. 6 Loyola (3-3-3, 12 pts.) and No. 4 Colgate (4-3-2, 14 pts.) hosting No. 5 Lehigh (4-4-1, 13 pts.).
Even though they couldn't get all three points and the outright regular-season title, it has been a remarkable turnaround season for the Bison. Bucknell finished in last place with five points a year ago and now has vaulted all the way up from 10th to a tie for first place.
Bucknell had two good chances in the opening 20 minutes. In the 12th minute, Drew Roskos got to the end line and pulled a pass back to Cohen Weaver, whose shot skipped just wide of the left post. Nine minutes later a free kick fell to Jack Roberto, who chipped a ball to himself and then ripped a left-footed volley over the bar.
Freddie Lapworth, who recorded his seventh clean sheet of the year, made a critical intervention in the final minute of the half when he dove to his left to intercept Charlie Herley's square pass that might have been a tap-in goal.
Loyola's closest call came just past the hour mark when Jake Sweeney's header from a corner kick went just wide.
With Boston University's game having reached full time, Bucknell pressed hard for the win. In the 72nd minute, David Krumov collected a half clearance outside the box and flushed a shot off the crossbar. Just over four minutes later, Cade Whitmire and Drew Roskos worked a beautiful 1-2 in tight space inside the box. Loyola keeper Dylan van der Walt made a terrific diving save on Roskos, and Whitmire's follow-up attempt went over the bar.
Krumov shot high on a promising counterattack in the 83rd minute, and then the Bison put one in the back of the net in the 86th, but it was waved off on a tight offside call. Kasper Piela's free kick into the area was flicked on and then chested in by Collin Sullivan, but he was deemed to be offside.
"We've been able to get results late in games recently, and we were hoping for some more of that magic tonight," said head coach Dave Brandt. "It was a nervy game at times and Loyola is a difficult team to play. We were playing to win and gutted out a point. Now we will regroup and try to get as strong as we can for the tournament. We're thrilled to be playing at home."
Lapworth and van der Walt both finished with two saves, and the shot board was also even at 9-9.
The point was good enough for the Greyhounds to nab the final postseason berth. They tied for sixth place with Holy Cross on 12 points but held the tiebreaker based on a 2-1 win earlier in the season.
