RESULTS
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Clara Renner led three finalists in the 500-yard freestyle with the third-fastest swim in Bucknell history, highlighting the opening day of the Bucknell Invitational for the Bison women's swimming and diving team at Kinney Natatorium. The Bison are in third place in a seven-team field with 299 points, trailing only Delaware (421) and Connecticut (404).
Bucknell is 23 points ahead of fourth-place Fordham, with Davidson (255), Seton Hall (196), and UMBC (165) rounding out a strong field. This is a three-day trials/finals meet, with competition continuing through Sunday.
Friday evening's first finals session got off to a hot start with four teams finishing just over a second apart in the 200 freestyle relay. Bucknell placed fourth in 1:33.58, which made the quartet of Jennifer Bolden, Sara Ketron, Kyla Kelly, and Ashley Piacentino the eighth-fastest in team history. Kelly helped break the school record in the 200 free relay at last year's Patriot League Championships, and Bolden was on the former record-setting relay, which now sits No. 2 all-time. That mark was set at this meet two years ago.
The first individual final of the night was the 500 free, and the Bison had three swimmers qualify for the final. Renner, who has burst onto the collegiate scene with eight wins in her first three meets, was the runner-up in the 500 free to Seton Hall's Allie Waggoner. Renner is now the third-fastest swimmer in Bucknell history in that event, and she is already just three seconds shy of Maddie Hartigan's record.
Kelly Byrne finished fifth and Ketron eighth on a short turnaround in the 500.
In the 200 individual medley, Kelly placed sixth in a time of 2:04.13. Her 2:03.04 in the morning prelims was a personal best, and she remains the ninth-fastest Bison all-time in that event. Freshman Sydney Jee won the B Final in the 200 IM. Jee just snuck into the B Final in the morning prelims, then shaved 2.9 seconds off that time to win her race in the evening.
Bolden continued her busy evening by leading the team with a 15th-place finish in the 50 free and then anchoring the 400 medley relay to close out the night. Her prelim time of 23.70 in the 50 free was just .13 seconds outside the Bucknell top-10.
The 400 medley relay unit of Sofia Burns, Hanna Bingley, Sam Benzija, and Bolden finished fourth in 3:46.11.
Diving also got underway on Friday, with the women competing on the 1-meter board. Natalie Penman led the Bison with a 14th-place finish.
Day 2 of the Bucknell Invitational gets underway at 10 a.m. Saturday with qualifying heats in five more events.
