TEANECK, N.J.- Ashley Sofilkanich's career-high 27 points were impressive but not enough to lift the Bucknell Bison (0-3) over the undefeated FDU Knights (4-0) in a 67-56 loss on Wednesday night.
FDU, the favorites to win the Northeast Conference, used a defensive masterclass in the second quarter to seize a lead they would never yield. The Knights outscored the Bison 14-3 in the second stanza as Bucknell shot 1-of-14 (7.3%) from the field.
Bucknell trailed FDU 47-28 entering the final quarter. The Bison tallied 28 points to equal the output of the first three periods, but the Knights scored enough to keep any chance of an epic comeback at bay.
Sofilkanich dominated the Knights, playing in front of 30-40 ardent fans in her home state. Her 27 points arrived on 11-of-25 shooting from the field and 5-of-5 from the free throw line. She had nine rebounds, one away from her sixth career double-double. Her previous best was 22 points, earned twice, and last against Lehigh on Feb. 14, 2024.
Both teams shot 18 times from beyond the three-point line. The difference resided in FDU making eight and the Bison hitting only two. Bucknell's hot three-point shooting in the first two games vanished against a pressing FDU defense.
Bucknell shot 22-of-66 (33.3%) for the game while FDU hit 22-of-49 (44.9).
The first quarter did not suggest the final score. Bucknell led 13-12 on 6-of-14 shooting. The Bison hit their shots and played aggressive defense on the Knights.
The Bison tried to rally in the third quarter but could not edge closer to the hard-charging Knights who responded to every Bucknell basket and extended their advantage to 20 points (46-26).
The Bison kept grinding and got within 56-44 with 2:37 remaining when Anna Kunzwiler earned two free throws. The transfer missed both shots and the opportunity disappeared as FDU scored five straight points.
Bucknell did not stop fighting and a 5-0 run from a Kunzwiler and a Zemitis basket made it 63-53 with 43 seconds left. But the Knights grounded out the clock and closed out the game.
The Orange & Blue complete the opening four-game road stretch with a trip to the Bay State to face Merrimack. The Saturday showdown is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip.
