RESULTS
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman sensation Clara Renner won three more events while posting the third-fastest time in school history in the 200-yard butterfly, leading the Bucknell women's swimming & diving team to one-sided victories over American and Lafayette and a close loss to Navy in a quadrangular meet on Saturday at Kinney Natatorium.
The Bison defeated American 244.5-54.5 and Lafayette 234-66, and they fell 161-134 to a Navy squad that has captured the last 12 Patriot League titles. Now 3-1 on the season, Bucknell won six events outright, finished ahead of American in every event, and placed in front of Lafayette in all but two.
In addition to Renner's three first-place finishes against the full field, Kyla Kelly won two and Rylie Giles one. The Bison also notched first-place points in the meet-ending 200 freestyle relay, with Navy swimming exhibition after clinching the meet.
Renner now has eight individual wins in three meets to start her career. On Saturday she won the 500 and 1000 freestyles and the 200 fly. The latter was one of the best races of the day. Renner touched in 2:01.65, just .29 seconds ahead of Navy's Caroline Irwin. That duo was five seconds ahead of the rest of the field. It was also a personal best for Renner by nearly two seconds, and she vaulted from ninth to third on Bucknell's all-time list. It was the fastest swim by a Bison that event in five seasons, and Renner is already closing in on Julianna Foss' school record of 2:00.00, set at the 2018 Patriot League Championships.
In the 500 free, Renner and Kelly Byrne took the top two spots, and in the 1000 free, Renner and Byrne went 1-3 with Navy's Marin Rose in between.
Kelly, who had two wins and a third in Bucknell's most recent meet against Seton Hall and Binghamton, captured the 100 free and 100 individual medley and also finished fourth in the 50 free on Saturday. She posted a time of 52.44 in the 100 free, with Navy taking the next three spots.
Giles was victorious in the 200 free. Her time of 1:52.38 was two seconds faster than Navy's Erin Miller. Virginia Hastings and Ashley Piacentino were third and fifth, trailing only Mids.
Other Bison who won events when compared to Lafayette and American were Burns in the 100 back, Sydney Jee in the 100 breast, Hastings in the 50 free, Talia Bugel in the 200 back, and Skye Sunderhauf in the 100 fly. Both Bison relays – the 200 medley and 200 free – also finished ahead of the Leopards and Eagles. The 50 free was a wild race, with the top seven finishers all touching within a half-second.
Natalie Penman was not only the top Bison in both diving events, but she set a PR on the 3-meter board with the ninth-best score in team history (258.55). That was good for a third-place finish, behind only two Navy divers.
Next up is the Bucknell Invitational at Kinney Natatorium Nov. 22-24. This is a three-day trials/finals meet designed to emulate the postseason championships later in the season.
