LEWISBURG, Pa. – After Saturday's 1-0 Senior Day victory over Holy Cross, a pair of Bucknell juniors have been honored with Patriot League weekly awards. Sydney Hess was voted Midfielder of the Week after scoring game's only goal in the second half, and Jess Benattar picked up Goalkeeper of the Week honors after earning her fourth solo shutout of the season.
The Bison and Crusaders were mired in a scoreless deadlock into the 67th minute at Emmitt Field on Saturday, until Hess changed the game by heading home a Reese Evans corner kick. It was Hess's first goal of the season and second of her career. The Benton, Pa., native plays a defensive-focused holding center midfield position, and at that end of the pitch she helped limit Holy Cross to three shots on target on the way to the team's sixth clean sheet of the season.
Those three shots that did make it on goal were all gobbled up by Benattar, who continues to put up stellar results in her first year of regular game action. The Cranbury, N.J., native is now 6-1-1 in 10 appearances (nine starts), with 22 saves and only four goals against. Benattar leads the Patriot League in goals against average (0.51) while ranking third in save percentage (.846). She also ranks 24th nationally in GAA and 38th in save percentage.
The Bison are now 7-3-2 overall and 3-1 in Patriot League play, and they are tied for first place with Army West Point five more PL match days to come. Next up is a road trip to Navy on Friday evening to face a Mids side that is only two points off the lead at 2-1-1.
