LEWISBURG, Pa. – Junior fullback Ben Sheffield and freshman forward Drew Roskos earned Patriot League weekly honors on Monday after turning in strong performances against No. 7 West Virginia and Lehigh. Sheffield earned the Defensive Player of the Week nod, while Roskos was picked as the Rookie of the Week.
Sheffield had his hands full with the speedy front line of West Virginia, which was ranked No. 1 in the nation earlier in the year after advancing all the way to the NCAA College Cup semifinals last season. After the Bison conceded a goal just over a minute into the match, they held strong from there and limited the Mountaineers to just the one tally.
Sheffield then got in on the offensive action Saturday night against Lehigh, when the Bison came from behind twice in a 2-2 draw. The Grosse Pointe, Mich., native headed home a Gianluca Marroni corner kick late in the first half after the Mountain Hawks had gone ahead on a penalty kick seven minutes earlier.
Down 2-1, Bucknell struck again on a corner kick in the 65th minute, and again it was Sheffield who was the first to the ball in the scrum. His header toward the near post was slotted home by Roskos, and the Bison salvaged a point and a hold on first place in the Patriot League with the draw.
For Roskos, it was his second career goal and first since opening day at Robert Morris. The Delran, N.J., native has bounced back nicely after missing two weeks with an injury.
At 4-4-2 overall and 2-0-2 in the Patriot League, the Bison are tied with Colgate atop the conference table. Lehigh, American, and Navy are all one point back.
Bucknell will play its next four on the road, starting Tuesday night with a non-conference clash with Binghamton. The Bison will then take on defending champion Boston University on Saturday.
