LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell junior Amar Tahirovic has been selected as this week's Bison of the Week after a dominant performance against Patriot League competition at the league's qualifying tournament for the ITA Conference Masters Championships.
Tahirovic validated his No. 1 seed in both singles and doubles by winning both competitions over the weekend at West Point. He teamed up with Brendan McDonald to win the doubles bracket. The Bison duo won both their semifinal and championship matches in tiebreakers against Army and Lehigh, respectively.
In singles, Tahirovic started with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Jaeger, he conceded only one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Army's Alan Ton, and then he did blank Josh Israel of Colgate 6-0, 6-0 in the semis. His biggest test of the weekend came in the championship match against his own teammate, fourth-seeded Adam Stavrakas, who also had not lost a set up until that point.
After Stavrakas won the first set in a tiebreaker 8-6, Tahirovic bounced back and took the second set 6-3, and then he claimed the third set in another long 8-6 tiebreaker.
Tahirovic is now 9-1 in singles this fall, and he and McDonald will now be headed to Rome, Ga., for the ITA Conference Masters Championships Nov. 7-10. The event will feature draws of 32 singles players and 32 doubles teams, with each Division I conference represented. At this tournament, four players – the four semifinalists -- will automatically qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship. Meanwhile, three doubles teams – the champion, runner-up, and third-place finisher -- will automatically qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship.
