LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's golf team concluded the 2024 fall season on a positive note, parlaying two rounds in the 60s into a best-in-field 281 team score on the final day of the Bucknell Invitational. The Bison moved up to a fourth-place finish with its best team score of the season to date.
Michael Rudnick fired a career-best, 3-under-par 67 on Tuesday. His only blemish was an early bogey at the par-3 second hole, which played as the most difficult hole on the course with an average of .61 strokes over par. Rudnick then shot 4-under over the final 16 holes, including birdies at 3, 9, 10, and 15.
Hayden Quinn capped off an outstanding fall season with a 1-under 69, which left him in a tie for third place at 1-under 209 (69-71-69) for the tournament. Three birdies in a four-hole span at 6, 8 and 9 pushed him into a tie for the lead at 2-under, but a bogey at the par-3 16th proved costly. Still, it was Quinn's second top-five finish of the season, and he lowered his team-best scoring average to 72.6.
The Bison also counted a 72 from freshman Jack Hartman, who was 3-over after three holes but played the rest of the round in 1-under, including birdies at 4, 6, and 9. James Key turned in his best round of the fall with a 3-over 73.
St. John's won the 18-team tournament with an 855 total (282-291-282), finishing four shots clear of Colgate. Youngstown State was third at 861, followed by Bucknell at 862 and Le Moyne at 866. Bucknell's 1-over 281 was the best in the field in the final round, one better than St. John's.
There was drama in the medalist chase, as Devin Smith of Mount St. Mary's carded his second straight 67 to finish at 3-under 207, good for a one-shot lead over Bryant's Dylan Gallagher, who also closed with a 67. Smith started his final round on the 10th hole, and down the stretch he made an ace at No. 4 and birdies at 7 and 9 to win by one.
Quinn joined St. John's Peicheng Chen, Wagner's Thomas Choi, and Le Moyne's Owen Corby in a tie for third at 1-under.
Bucknell will now hit the Bachman Golf Center training facilities in preparation for the spring season, which gets underway Feb. 16-18 at the Loyola Intercollegiate at Palm Valley GC in Arizona.
