Neilson's Golden Goal Sends Bucknell Past Cornell in 3-2 Overtime Triumph

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Bucknell Bison field hockey team (7-6) extended its winning streak to three games with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Cornell Big Red (3-8) on Sunday afternoon. Lily Neilson tallied two scores, including the golden-goal in overtime to pull the Bison above .500 for the first time in 2024.Â
Neilson's two goals moved her into a tie for first place in Bucknell history with Karin Wegener. Both Wegener and Neilson recorded 55 goals in their illustrious careers. Neilson now sits in a tie for third place in Patriot League history with Noor Coenen (2017-21) of American University.Â
Bucknell has scored 13 goals during the three-game winning streak and only yielded three goals, two of which have come via penalty stroke.Â
Kira Leclercq opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a goal off a penalty corner. Hannah Guarente provided the insertion and Nicky Punt perfectly positioned the sphere for the junior defender. Her sixth goal of 2024 sped past the Cornell defense.Â
Cornell equalized ten minutes later when they received a penalty stroke opportunity. Claire Vaughn converted the chance for her first goal of the season. The half ended without further scoring.Â
The Big Red seized the lead when a yellow card on Gianna Puorro led to another penalty stroke opportunity. Vaughn again received the opportunity and she delivered for the second straight time.
The advantage proved short-lived. Two minutes later, Neilson scored off a penalty corner. Leclercq received the insertion and sent the ball to Neilson. The forward maneuvered into the circle and used a reverse strike to send a high-flying shot into the right corner.Â
Regulation ended without any more points. The fourth quarter, like the weather, was a cold, dreary affair. Only one shot from Cornell occurred.Â
Overtime only lasted one minute and 35 seconds. Sally Hunter sent the ball to Neilson and trusted the senior star to make magic. She did via the reverse strike well. A decisive turnaround swing sent the sphere sizzling past the Big Red goalkeeper. The Bison bench erupted in jubilation and swarmed the Australian striker. The damp weather was forgotten.Â
