WASHINGTON, D.C.- The Bucknell Bison women's basketball team (3-10, 0-2 PL) dropped a 58-47 decision to the American Eagles (4-9, 2-0 PL) on Saturday afternoon. The Bison led for the entire first half but were undone by a 21-7 American advantage in the third quarter. Bucknell fell behind the Eagles, last had the lead at the 6:31 mark in the third, and could not rally as American collected 39 second-half points to the Orange and Blue's 22.Â
Emma Theodorsson led the Bison with 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting. Ashley O'Connor was second for Bucknell with eight points. All eight Bison who played tallied on the scoresheet. Grace Sullivan notched nine rebounds to lead Bucknell.
American had three players in double-digits with Bailey Grabee leading the trio with 13 points.Â
The Bison shot 16-of-52 (30.8%) from the field, while American topped off at 25-of-60 (41.7%).Â
The Bison owned the first quarter. The Orange & Blue blitzed to a 7-0 run powered by a Theodorsson jump shot, an O'Connor three-pointer, and two Ashley Sofilkanich free throws. American tallied two baskets before Julie Kulesza buried a trey. Both teams traded baskets to end the first quarter, with the Bison up 12-6.Â
Bucknell continued its winning play in the second quarter. Isabella King doused the Eagles' attempt at a run with a sparkling three-pointer for a 17-8 score. The margin was the largest Bison lead of the afternoon. The Orange & Blue continued cruising despite several American baskets when Theodorsson hit a trey. But in an omen of things to come, American ended the half on a 5-0 run for a narrow 22-19 Bucknell lead.Â
Out of halftime, American extended its run to 9-0 and took its first lead, 23-22. Sullivan answered with a basket, but American responded 19 seconds later, permanently seizing the advantage. The Eagles' basket sparked another 9-0 run. Sullivan stepped up again to end the run with a basket, and King added a free throw to cut the deficit to 32-28. American concluded its 21-7 third quarter with a 6-1 run for a 40-29 lead.Â
The Bison scored 18 points in the fourth quarter, its highest output of the afternoon. However, the Eagles tallied the same amount to blunt any comeback opportunities. Bucknell's best chance at a rally came down 49-35. O'Connor and Theodorsson deposited back-to-back three-pointers to bring the deficit to single digits with 5:30 remaining. Alas, American, as usual, answered 21 seconds later to stem the momentum. Theodorsson hit another three with 2:05 left to cut the score to 55-46, but Bucknell could not get closer. An American layup ended the game, 58-47.Â
