BETHLEHEM, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison volleyball team (5-7, 1-2 PL) staged a patented 3-2 comeback win (21-25, 25-16, 21-25, 27-25, 15-13) over its instate rival the Lehigh Mountain Hawks (9-5, 1-2 PL) on Friday night. Bucknell fell behind two sets to one before storming back to triumph in five sets. It was the Orange & Blue's first win at Lehigh since 2010.
Catherine Jamison continued her strong senior season by leading the squad in kills with 17. Sidney Shaffer provided extra firepower with 16 kills, including the match-winner. Jordan Hardy collected 25 digs.
Recap
Bucknell scored the game's first point but lost the plot as Lehigh tallied leads of 6-2 and 15-8. The Mountain Hawks stretched their wings to lead 21-14 before the Bison stampeded into striking distance. A 5-0 run powered by two Jamison kills sliced into Lehigh's advantage. Alas, the Mountain Hawks tallied twice in response. Bucknell got within 24-21 before a service error by Tijana Kostic ended the set.
The second set was strongly contested from the opening serve. The teams battled back and forth until the amount was 6-6. Bucknell underwent an 8-2 run to seize the momentum. The stretch was powered by Jamison and Cameron Lloyd's kills. The Bison continued to tally more points until the advantage was 22-14 Bucknell. Lehigh sneaked to within 22-16 before the Mountain Hawks committed three straight errors to hand the Orange & Blue the set win and tie the match.
The third set generally paralleled the first in the start and outcome. Bucknell started the repeat by scoring the first point. Lehigh struck back and forged ahead 6-3. The Bison counterattacked and took a 10-9 lead on a Hardy's service ace. A Bri Frazilus kill gave Bucknell a 14-12 advantage before a 4-0 Lehigh run flipped the switch. Bucknell would never lead again in the set as Lehigh finished it winning 25-21.
Lehigh started the fourth set on a 3-0 run. Bucknell immediately answered with the same stretch of scoring. Events looked dire for Bucknell when the Mountain Hawks increased its edge to 14-8. But the Bison, always at their best in tight situations, used a 9-1 run to turn the set and match around. Two service aces headlined the rally. The teams alternated points until the Bison were up 24-21 and poised to win the set. Lehigh mustered a turnaround and tied the score at 24-24. The teams traded a point each, and then a Shaffer kill and a Lehigh error gave Bucknell the set and constructed a decisive fifth round.
The Mountain Hawks scored the first point in the fifth set, but Bucknell raced out to a 7-3 lead. Proving the adage that volleyball is a game of runs, Lehigh tied up the game at 8-8. The teams swapped points until Lehigh had a 12-11 advantage. Then, Shaffer decided to take over the contest. A 3-0 run, with two points coming from her kills, gave Bucknell the 14-12 lead and the opportunity for match point. Lehigh had a short burst of life with a single kill. Shaffer ended any Mountain Hawks dreams with a soft spike that found an opening. The ball hit the court, and Bucknell had its first Patriot League win of 2023.
Hardy's 25 digs to pass Chelsea Anderson for fourth all-time in career digs. Anderson recorded 1210 digs from 2002-2005.
