EASTON, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison volleyball team (6-7, 2-2 PL) clinched its second win of the weekend by defeating the Lafayette Leopards in four sets (25-17, 25-23, 21-25, 25-13) on Saturday night. Bri Frazilus led a balanced attack with 12 kills, and Jordan Hardy collected 28 digs to lead both teams. For the first time since 2005, the Bison won two road conference games in the same weekend, and for the first time since 2017, Bucknell won back-to-back PL road games.
Recap
Lafayette seized the early advantage with a 7-3 lead in the first set, but the Bison remained undaunted and counterattacked to grab an 11-10 advantage. The teams exchanged points until the score was 15-14 Bucknell. The Bison used a 6-1 run to separate themselves from the Leopards' reach. Two Bison errors could not keep Lafayette in the black, as Bucknell collected four more points to win the set.
The Leopards built a 3-0 lead to start the second start before the Bison fought back to grab an 8-7 edge. Lafayette countered with a 5-0 run to regain the advantage. The Leopards extended their lead to 19-13 and seemed to prime to win the second set. Bucknell rallied using three Frazilus kills and two Lafayette errors to creep within one point. The Easton team used a mini 3-1 run to reestablish breathing distance. Bucknell disregarded the effort and went on a 6-1 run to win the second set. Lafayette errors generated five out of the six points.
The teams entered the third set battling back and forth to a 7-7 gridlock. The Bison undertook a 5-1 run to gain a 12-8 lead. Lafayette fought back with its own 5-1 stretch to retie the game at 13-13. The Leopards slipped ahead by four points (20-16) before Bucknell got within one point on a 3-0 run. Lafayette went on a 5-2 streak to extend the game to four sets.
The extension proved futile as Bucknell, full of zeal, rushed out to a 5-0 lead in the fifth set. The Bison led 10-3 when Lafayette used a 4-0 sequence to slide within three points. Bucknell stood steadfast and increased its margin to 14-9. The Bison repeating the theme of 6-1 runs used another one to set the tone of impending victory. Lafayette tallied three more points, but Frazilus scored Bucknell's final four points to clinch the set and match win.
Notes
The two-weekend wins in 2005 were also against Lafayette and Lehigh, reinforcing that history does have a fondness for rhyming.
Up Next
The Bison will stay on the road to battle Navy on Sept. 29 and Loyola (Md.) on Sept. 30.
