Field Hockey Rallies for Dramatic Win over Kent State
9/10/2023 4:41:00 PM | Field Hockey
LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison field hockey team (3-3, 0-0 PL) pulled off the epic rally to stun the Kent State Golden Flashes (1-5, 0-0 MAC), 2-1 at Graham Field on Sunday. The Bison trailed 1-0 for most of the game until two goals by Kira Leclercq and Gianna Puorro in the final five minutes brought victory to Bucknell.
Recap
The first quarter went by without much excitement. Both teams had several opportunities via penalty corners and shots, but the defenses stood tall and prevented any scoring.
Kent State struck for a goal two minutes into the second period. A penalty corner set up the score. The Golden Flashes drew up a beautiful play where the inserter received the ball after passing it out. The left side of the goal was wide open for the score. Bucknell and Kent State both had several chances in the rest of the quarter, but the goals remain clear of spheres.
The third quarter passed with little fanfare. Neither team took a shot until the final minute. During the quarter, two yellow cards, one for a player on each team, were issued. With 11 seconds left, Bucknell drew a penalty corner. But the shot attempts of Mia Fields and Lily Neilson were denied.
For most of the fourth quarter, Bucknell repeatedly battered at the gates with penalty corners and shots but was denied. Finally, with under five minutes left to play, Kira Leclercq received an insertion pass from Isabella Pavlides. Mia Fields set up the ball, and the German defender slammed home a shot past the goalie to tie up the game.
A few minutes later, Gianna Puorro decided to go full superheroine on her own accord by zig-zagging between defenders and delivering a powerful stroke past the goalkeeper for the 2-1 Bison advantage.
The Bison had to hold on for a minute and a half to claim the win. A feat made easier when a Kent State player drew a yellow card. A final penalty corner by Bucknell completed the contest and gave Bison a 3-3 record on the year.
Notes
Bucknell dominated the pace of play, recording 17 shots to Kent's seven and 13 penalty corners to the Golden Flashes' four.
The Bison went 2-0 over the weekend to remain undefeated at Graham Field.
