Women’s Soccer Finishes in 1-1 Draw with Villanova

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Just 10 minutes after conceding in the opening moments of the second half, Henna Andican scored off a corner kick scrum to help the Bucknell women's soccer team salvage a 1-1 draw with visiting Villanova on Thursday night at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.
Now 2-2-1 on the season, the Bison were on the defensive throughout much of the first half as Villanova (2-0-2) piled up a 9-2 shot advantage. Jenna Hall made two stellar saves on Megan Donnelly to keep it scoreless at intermission, but the Wildcats found the breakthrough just 52 seconds into the second stanza.
Former Bucknell standout Rylee Donaldson, now a fifth-year graduate student at Villanova, delivered a well-placed through ball to Makayla Stadler in behind the back line, and Stader finished inside the far post for her third goal of the season.
The Bison, coming off two straight games against top-25 competition where scoring chances were hard to come by, responded well to the goal. Teresa Deda's long ball ahead to Andican had to be played out for a corner kick, and then Villanova keeper Payton Woodward deflected Deda's service over the bar, resulting in a second corner from the opposite side. Reese Evans took attempt No. 2, and her inswinger was punched away by Woodward but only as far as Andican in the center of the box. Andican took the ball out of the air and then volleyed a left-footed shot into the top-right corner.
It was Andican's team-leading third goal of the season, surpassing her total from her rookie campaign in 2022.
The Bison found a bounce in their steps after the goal and produced some high-quality chances over the next 10 minutes. Evans' long-distance attempt from the left side required a tip-over from Woodward, and then Deda just missed wide on two well-taken left-footed attempts.
Villanova regained its footing in the late stages of the half, and the Bison had to deal with several set-piece services into their box. Hall's eighth and final save of the night came on a glancing header by Jackie Richards with four minutes to play.
Evans ripped one over the bar with three minutes to go, and moments later Eva Frankovic headed a ball wide off a long free kick. Evans had one more chance with the final countdown at five seconds, but her curling shot from 23 yards out was right at Woodward.
"I really liked the response after a slow start," said head coach Kelly Cook. "We were not happy to give up a goal in the first minute of the second half, and we didn't start the game well either. That's something we will have to correct, but even though we were not at our best we had some really good attacking moments in the second half."
Villanova finished with a 16-12 edge in shots and a 5-3 lead in corner kicks.
