About the Bison
- Bucknell makes its traditional season-opening trip to Hamilton, N.Y., for the Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational this weekend. The Bison will make their 2023 fall debut as part of a 12-team field that includes Patriot League rivals Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, and Lehigh.
- Head coach Mike Binney is back for his 10th season, and he will send out one of his youngest squads in recent memory. The Bison have only one senior and two juniors on this year's roster, and his opening-weekend lineup will consist of two freshmen, three sophomores, and a junior.
- The Bison conducted their annual Q-School event last weekend at the Bucknell Golf Club, and sophomore Andres Barraza ran away with it, posting rounds of 68-67-67 for an 8-under total of 202. That was the lowest Q-School tally during Binney's tenure at Bucknell.
- Sophomores Lyman Brackett and James Robbins along with freshmen Alex Creamean and Hayden Quinn, all finished in a four-way tie for second place at 215. Robbins posted a final-round 67 to claim a lineup spot for Colgate. Junior Jake Maddaloni carded 71-72-73 to grab the No. 6 spot, and he will be in the lineup this week in Colgate's play-6, count-4 format.
- Max Orwicz is the team's lone senior, and he will be joined by juniors Maddaloni and Michael Rudnick as team captains.
- The Bison must account for the loss of four talented seniors in Blake Wisdom, Jackson Bussell, Jack Gardner, and Josh Holtschlag. Wisdom, who is using his fifth year of eligibility as a graduate student at Wisconsin, set a school record with a 73.49 career scoring average. Bussell ranks second at 73.78.
- Bucknell has competed in Colgate's fall tournament every year since 2002 (except for 2011, when the event was rained out, and 2020, when it was canceled due to COVID-19). Prior to 2002, Colgate and Cornell ran a combined event for several years, utilizing both schools' courses.
- The Bison have fared well in this event, winning it in 2004 and 2006 while finishing in the top four in 12 of 19 years. Brian Bartow is Bucknell's lone individual champion here. He won the Colgate Invitational in 2009.
- Bucknell finished ninth out of 14 teams at Colgate last fall. Jackson Bussell led the way with a T-6th finish and rounds of 72-69-73.
- Robbins and Maddaloni are the only Bison in this week's lineup who have played in a collegiate event at Seven Oaks. Maddaloni shot 75-79 and Robbins 80-74 in the Upstate Battle last April. Robbins was also in action in last fall's Alex Lagowitz Memorial, posting 79-78-81 in his collegiate debut.
- After Colgate's tournament, Bucknell will play in the Cornell Invitational the following weekend. With Cornell's course under renovation, the tournament will be played at Watchung Valley Country Club in New Jersey.
- Bucknell has five tournaments on the fall slate. The Bison will also be at Yale's Macdonald Cup on Sept. 23-24, and they will host the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg on Oct. 8-10 and the Veterans Intercollegiate at Sebonack GC on Long Island on Oct. 30-31.
