PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison field hockey team wrapped up its expedition to the City of Brotherly Love with a 2-1 defeat to Temple. The Bison and Owls were tied 1-1 at halftime, but Temple's third-quarter goal proved to be the difference maker.Â
The Bison outshot Temple 11-8, but the Owls made an extra shot count. Both teams recorded four corners.Â
Sarah Althouse was granted her first collegiate start as the goalkeeper and performed admirably, recording four saves.Â
Recap
The first quarter was uneventful as both teams combined for only three shots, with Temple taking the majority of attempts. It was mostly a defensive effort as the squads probed for the opposition's weak points.Â
Events heated up in the second stanza. The Owls broke the deadlock with a goal five minutes into the action. Bucknell replied seven minutes later when Isabella Pavlides slammed home a shot. It was Bucknell's first goal of the season and Pavlides' fourth career goal. Neither team arranged a threat in the final minutes before halftime.Â
The third quarter witnessed only one shot but was deadly for Bucknell's aspirations as Temple converted an opportunity for the 2-1 lead that the Owls would not forego. The only action of note during the period was a yellow card issued to Pavlides.Â
As moribund as the third quarter was, the final period featured plenty of fiery action and dramatic excitement, with Bucknell recording six shot attempts and Temple chipping in four. Despite the quantity, no shots found themselves past the keepers. The Bison had the first flurry of shots two minutes into the period. Four times in a minute did the Bison assault the Temple goalkeeper to no avail. Temple counterattacked four minutes later with four shots off three corner passes. Althouse stood tall, racking up three saves. In the last minute, Bucknell launched two final volleys off two corners, but both attempts were collected, and Temple escaped with the 2-1 victory.Â
Up Next
The Bison head to Columbus, Ohio, on Sept. 1 to play Ball State and remain there to duel Ohio State on Sept. 3.Â
